dowly [ˈdaʊlɪ]adj Northern English dialect dull; low-spirited; dismal[perhaps from Old English dol dull]

See, it actually means something, there is no reason to spell it any other way. (Actually, I found out it means something year or two after I started to use the nick )

As for the word spelled you probably are pointing at, no both spelt and spelled are correct AFAIK.

Funny, I always thought the correct spelling was "dowelly"... as in, "having a small peg."
