Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately I'll be out for a week so this repair will have to wait.

I only hope it still looks like a joystick by the time I return.

You fellas should look into Logitec's G940.
I've been through them all, from thrustmaster to saitek, and this system beats them all and includes stick, throttle, and pedals in one sweet system.

It looks good but both the logitech sticks I've owned died or had calibration issues within a year. Enough to void the return period but not what I expect out of stick.

If money wasn't an issue I get this:
