I've only seen one myself during the campaign. Off the coast of Norway during Weserubung, I was closing in on an allied task force. I heard explosions and took a peak through the periscope. I saw a ship burning, and thought they had discoverd me and that two ships collided trying to zig-zag. Next thing I know the task force ships opened up with their AA guns, as a group of Stukas attacked. A few more ships were sunk or damaged, and most of the planes were shot down. I have to admit, I probably lost a great opportunity to attack while they were preoccupied, but I couldn't help but watch the show!

I've witnessed two strikes so far:

One in the Channel a short time after radioing contact with a convoy. That was fun to watch - and unexpected. France was still unoccupied, and it hadn't occurred to me that the LW could reach that far from Germany.

The second raid I've seen was on the port of Hela, and again it was unexpected. It was just after the invasion of Poland, and I was in the harbor working some merchants over when bombs started dropping all over us. Who'd have thunk the Luftwaffe would also be wreaking havoc that morning? The bastards managed to unload a couple of bombs onto my sub. After the mist had settled and the Heinkels had flown away I took a peek around to see what was left. For everything they had dropped, only one merchant was destroyed!

If you return in bad weather you might notice that rain falls right through into the pens.

So do bombs.
Really?!?! I did not know this.

Late in one war (before I did DiD) I left port during air raids. I made sure to stay in the sub pen until it was over.

So the pens offer no protection?

The sub pens have no damage models so everything simply passes through them as if they weren't there.
