Agreed, it looks like a case of excessive force. But I think it is unfair to say that that sort of thing only happens in the South.

There are many good reasons not to go into the deep South, but police brutality isn't one of them - it can happen anywhere. The profession sure does seem to attract a lot of ***holes, and the lengths some policemen will go to to defend the actions of their fellow officers is astounding.
*edit* Just watched the video. I hope that woman sues that piece of garbage for every penny he's worth. Last edited by AngusJS; 04-18-10 at 08:55 AM. |

Yes TvM - can't go looking for any statistics to back up your claim can you?
In other words - you want to be able to throw hateful, random, "racist" crap out there about a group ya don't like - but don't want to have to back it up...... A quick search of data would "learn" you quite a bit. Look at what is termed "Arrest releated death" for 2003 thru 2006 - http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/dcr...dcst06let7.cfm The leading group with the most deaths? West - with California being the leader. Actually California led ALL the states in the number of arrestees who died in arrest related ways.... In fact - for this time frame - California actually had only 7 deaths less than the combined 12 states of the Midwest! If your stereotypical "them there rednecks" view was accurate - these numbers for the South would be expected to be substantially highter - but they are not. After all - the south is supposedly where a black or hispanic must fear all the white racists according to people like you. In the time span that California killed or was involved in the death of 465 arrestees - your target in the OP - Louisiana - had all of 23....(While Louisiana didn't report in 2003 - its pretty doubtful they killed 400+ people that year, then only popped one the next.) If you look at the majority of "cop watch" websites that look to track and monitor the behavior of police - notice that they all tend to gravitate to one geographical region - the west. Where there is a problem - people make a ruckus..... Its also interesting to note that the prevalence of brutality appears to be located in areas of the highest concentration of people - aka - cities. Which is why the midwest has such a lower occurance - fewer cities with people packed like sardines.... The majority of highly populated cities - are in the west.... *Ever notice how that old show "Cops" is always in some city - never in a rural area?* If you want to talk stereotypes - in the south we have police officers like Barney Fife and Andy Taylor - ya'll have the cops that beat up Rodney King and guys like Mark Furhman.... The South wins that game every time.... Stereotypes are exactly that - but seeing how you would rather defend your idiocy with "well don't ask me to back it up - I really don't have any statistics but this one post just reinforced all the stuff I think to be true so its all I need!" - I will keep this thread handy next time you want to complain about being stereotyped... Maybe I won't have to use it - you might actually grow up a little.... But I ain't holding my breath.

Bad situation all around. The Cop should get investigated, and I hope justice is served.
As for the OP, judge yourself and the place you live, thank you very much. You have no right whatsoever to insult an area of the U.S. that is home to many of the SubSim users. Perhaps you could learn a lesson in tolerance. It may do you some good. I would be ashamed if I spoke ill of others' homes like that. ![]() |

Well don'tcha know that taking a single incident can prove a whole group of people are bad.
Take Australians for example.... I never knew they were racist cannibals - but all the proof can be found in a cookbook that calls for "fresh ground black people" to season pasta. ![]() http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/04...est=latestnews Sure - everyone is claiming its a mis-print and a mistake by a computerized proof reader.... its all just a cover up! Anything taken individually - without any documentable pattern - can be twisted into anything. TvM simply did it out of his own fear and hatred for something different from himself. Just another example of the "tolerance" the left shows... ^ - look - a stereotype! ![]()

Boy, I'm sure glad I don't live in South California any more. Look at Rodney King.
And right below the video on YouTube is one labelled "Another Chicago woman beaten". It happens, and it shouldn't. Some cops abuse their authority, and deserve whatever punishment the law can give them. And no offense to anyone, but this looks like a blatant attempt to use one case out of a great many to point the finger at someone the poster doesn't like.

Sailor Steve - you should be ashamed of yourself!
Mentioning Chicago like that! Don't you know that is where the chosen one is from - and thus nothing bad ever could happen there? Your defaming the almight o - expect the FBI at the library soon!

The real deep south to avoid is just south of the border. Cuidad Juarez, for example.

As a britisher (and therefore, viewing this from outside), it strikes me that a region of a country with a history of 'burning ******s' less than a century ago, ought not to feel too bad or put upon because of a persistent stereotype for being 'good 'ole boys'.
Statistics are not required... they really did hang 'em from the cotton trees. For the same reason I don't like spending a night out on the town on a friday/saturday night in most of the northern town's I've been to - coming from the midlands (and not having a northern accent) and having long hair, but not a mono-brow that has no discernible divide between the hairline, I'm more or less guaranteed a kicking because I'm 'different' and 'not from round here'. It's grim up north, and there's a very good reason for it being recognised so. The op doesn't say 'this only happens in the south', perhaps that's the inference that some wish to take, but it didn't come across that way to me - as ever you bring only what you already have to the table. Preconceptions can be funny old things. More often than not they reveal more about you than you would perhaps choose to show sometimes. That said, there's no monopoly on racism and bigotry (as the rare incident here at subsim will attest), but stereotypes are just that, anecdotal but rooted in the truth and not just simple prejudice, else they wouldn't become stereotypes. But ultimately the grass is never greener on the other side of the fence; it's always the same colour and you have the same chance of stepping in something wet and soft that leaves a smell you just can't seem to get out of your carpet, no matter where you go. Regarding the footage, it certainly looks excessive - either she was a lot more aggravated and willing to self harm than the film lets on, or she got a good pasting from the only other people there. Whatever the case, the camera shouldn't have been turned off, if only to refute or corroborate police version of events. Here in the UK (as far as I'm aware) when you are detained by the police, they then assume a 'duty of care' over you which extends to not kicking your face in, or ensuring that you cannot harm yourself - for their protection as well as yours, physically. I'd say it's a good bet the cop gave her a beating, but if he had any reason to suspect she might hurt herself, then he should have covered his arse in an appropriate manner, either by leaving the camera recording or leaving the woman with another police officer present. All in all that was handled badly from where I'm looking. However, I always think it's important to remember that if the police arrest you, keep you mouth shut and behave; they are not acting for your best interests, and until you establish where you stand in relation to what you may or may not be getting charged with after consulting with your brief, DO NOT TALK TO THEM OR VOLUNTEER INFORMATION, save to confirm your identity. Even if you haven't done anything wrong, but especially if you think you have. this relates to the US better than the UK, as this labour government signed away our right to silence as a tacit admission of guilt... but there you go. Just because not everyone is out to get you, doesn't mean that some of them aren't. ![]()

you would have to find a pretty short guy to hang him in a "cotton tree"
![]() considering they are just a little over knee high and all Besides. The "****** burning" as you so bluntly put it, has pretty much subsided here in the last hundred+ years. Unless you travel to the most rural areas of the smallest towns in the southern united states... you are more likely to encounter people wearing a suit and tie, or polo shirts and khaki pants than you are to find some guy in a wife beater drinking beer on his front porch. EDIT: in fact, if it were not for the cars with the state plates - i doubt anyone could drive around virtually any given neighborhood or urban area in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi etc and tell it apart from an Urban area or Neighborhood in any part of the northern United States
