I agree with another individual who posted on a similar thread that we should be grateful we're getting a patch at all and, hopefully, it'll be as good as advertised as it's the only one we're likely to see. In my heart, and after being active since SH3, the, "unfinished state" SH5 was released in serves as indication Ubi's decided there's no future here and, having promised 5 for quite some time, terminated development and threw it on the market (I have other, more controversial opinions regarding Ubi's possible, plausible expectation that unpaid, "developers" would pick up the slack, but won't bother voicing again!)
Us old sim guys currently exist in an environment where the, "target market" primarily consists of those afflicted by, "short attention span" who believe no more thought or effort should go into a, "simulate simulation" game than taking the occasional moment to reload prior to resuming mass carnage. These folks haven't the patience or desire to spend lengthy periods of time plotting attacks or transiting to areas where targets may or may not be readily available. Furthermore, I suspect state-of-the-art PC games are on their deathbed anyway. It's easier to maintain a profit margin on a console game, plus they're less prone to pirating. And, of course, there's a Used market for those titles as well. my 0.02 cents/0.0146€ only. Be civil in your replies, for those of you prone to trolling... |

SH3 still has certain problems that weren't fixed by the patches, and yet it is hailed as the best.
SH4 still has certain problems that weren't fixed by the patches, but it was better than SH3 in most categories and still is only second best, mainly because it wasn't modded as much. SH5 is obviously gorgeous, even to those of who don't have it yet, and what's been done with modding so far is a great thing. With the same four patches and the same attention from modders it should be at least as good as SH3, and is looking to be much better in the long run. I only hope they manage to patch all the problems this time. Then it will without doubt be the ultimate subsim. At least until we get brain implants.

I am totally against this game, but let's face facts. If Ubi supports it through patches and modders work on the game for a year or two, it will probably end up being pretty darn good.

That sums it up pretty well, as some other posters have said SH5 is a diamond in the rough. It shows a lot of promise and interesting improvements in some areas, as well as some unfinished aspects and annoying bugs in others.
IF Ubisoft supports it through patches and an add-on and IF modders rally around it as they did SH3 and SH4, then it may become worthy to take its place in the Silent Hunter pantheon.... (...in the meantime, it is still kick ass fun. ![]() ![]()

This is a very encouraging thread. Especially to see old hands posting who I have trusted in these forums for more than 5 years. I haven't picked up the game yet but this thread helps to motivate me to do so before June which was my scheduled purchase date.
Tks! |

It has a lot of potential and will surely end up being better than either Sh3 and Sh4....but only if people with modding skills are attracted to this game. Obviously releasing the game in such an unfinished state and the intrusive DRM (sorry, but there really is an elephant in the control room) certainly doesn't help attract new talent. Fortunately, subsim has a lot of home grown talent ready to deploy to help save the title.
But it's all academic to me personally, unless of course someone shoots that damn elephant! ![]() Cheers, UG |
