Say, "I'm a lurker." That is your first step to recovery! We hold group meetings and hugs daily We also have a 'How to Post' workshop on Saturday. Refreshments served.

Here you go:

Sorry about the bite out of it. I was getting hungry and needed something to wash my beer down with.

Dont u guys thing lurker is a negativ synonym? I mean, just because we have an interest and read about issues, does not automaticlyt give us an inclination to write?

I was present while SH:3 was launched. I can remember some of u guys talking about submerging your feet in cold water to amplify the 'atmosphere'. Why not remove the time accelerator and not shave for
3 months? And your IRL crew-compartment should never se the light of day, live like a wampire. Imagine having absolute no privacy and getting depthcharged 15 hours straight while you cant do anything but try to cope with it?

Come to thing about it, why are we so fashinated about all this? 30000 submariners died a horrible death and at least as many on the allied side. Normal guys like you and me (no, mostly a lot younger) and they were only doing their duty to the country they loved (most were'nt nazists, but they were duped. Hitler gave germany their pride again but his real agenda never became public). Learn from history, man never changes but hopefully were are more aware today.

Not really. When I look at the stats and see 200 'Captains' and 800 'Stowaways' reading the forums, I think "Who are all these people?" Don't they have anything to say?"

Then one pops in asking for help, and never posts again, sometimes not even answering the answers to say "Thank you".

I love talking to people, and if I'm in a conversation just knowing that there are dozens of people listening in, who may or may not have something worthwhile to add, makes me depressed. Maybe some of them don't have anything to say, but I'll never know, will I?

Welcome!
Nothing at all negative about being a lurker. I was one here once and am still on a number of other forums where my fat fingers haven't had the inclination to run away with themselves.

As to the fascination I'm not sure what drove me into subs. My Father was Navy but on Aircraft Carriers so I always had an interest in all things nautical. I guess when I was younger subs seemed cool because they could get around without being seen.

The historical side has always been an interest of mine and reading and learning about how things worked, why they were done and the motications behind the history as always been interesting to me.

Yeah, "lurker" in general usage in English does have a somewhat negative connotation. Not sure it's the same online, as "lurking" on an internet forum usually serves a useful purpose. It's really the only way to get a "feel" for a forum and its membership and code of conduct and in my experience most of the time people appreciate someone doing that before they start posting.

Anyway, I imagine everybody's done it - not every forum is one where you feel inclined to join in the conversation. Sometimes you just want a bit of info, and once you get it, you're satisfied and don't need to come back. I've lost count of how many such places online I've registered with over the years... no doubt most of them no longer exist!

"Man" may never change, but certainly individual people can and often do.

I don't know know why I personally find u-boats, etc., so fascinating... other than that, like you, I've always been drawn to history and military history in particular. Studying martial arts has made me even more interested in the "warrior" aspect of human experience, while at the same time giving me a way to express that same part of myself in a constructive way... and it's made me a much more peaceful and easy-going person in my life overall, much less likely to react with aggression when and where it's not absolutely necessary.

And like you I saw the movie Das Boot and was mesmerized by it and I think that experience made me want to find out more. Never thought I'd end up subsimming, but... there you go.

Going on my join date/post ratio I confess, I am a pro-lurker

There's too much good stuff to read, no time for typing.
