Oh and my brother-in-law got a new job which starts the Monday after New Year's, he's been doing temp seasonal work since October when the place he worked at for 15 years started downsizing, i.e., letting go all the more highly paid longtime employees. Hearing him rewrite every other holiday song to include the phrase "I got a job, fa la la la la" made everything super-special this year.

Among the usual stuff (nerdy T-Shirts, Books, DVDs and so on)

I will get the belt fed Nerfgun (sold out in our area at the moment).

And, from my parents:
An original and antique...

Which is in the family for something like 3 generations now. Filling out the customs and ATF forms is going to be a pain though.

According to what I've read about Shun knives, the technology used in the blade-making is basically the same as what's used to make katana blades. I've wanted one ever since I heard about them and saw them for the first time... it's always been a "when I have the money" thing which naturally never comes to pass. I have decent kitchen knives which I've acquired over time by picking things up on sale or clearance, but these were always WAY out of my price range plus they're not the kind of things that typically end up in sale or clearance bins, you know? But my sister works in a gigantic international market here, in the specialty department where they sell high-end cookware and cutlery and kitchen gadgets, so she gets a bit of a discount on what they sell there and she asked me last year which one I would get if I had a choice and I told her no way, even the itty bitty paring knife was more money than I wanted her to spend on one gift. This year because of the recession the vendor actually put some of the Shun knives on special to increase sales plus she got her discount plus her husband got what looks like a really good job just last week so they decided to really "make Christmas happen" and surprise me. Boy oh boy was I surprised.

I will probably lose a finger dicing celery but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make because it's JUST. SO. PURTY.

I'm not christian nor the breed of pagan that everybody claims invented celebrating the birth of the christian prophet or whatever you people call it. So I don't celebrate x-mas but still someone managed to give me a copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SOC on steam and I bought myself a laptop last week and copy of x3:Terran Conflict to test out the dual core processor on.
