Applying vinegar is not recommended in all cases, since not all jellyfish are the same. The Man-Of-War for example is no box jellyfish, and studies get quoted with having shown that spilling vinegar onto its tentacles on the skin often do not lessen but increase the the symptoms.

Yup every year right around this time of year they start washing up on the east coast of florida. Most of the time you can avoid them as they float on the surface, however their tenticles string along as much as 6 foot.

I never saw the one that got me but it musta been a little one.

There are other jelly fish out there too. There is the infamous 'butterfish' jelly fish which has not tenticles per se and only sting if broken open. We used to pick em up and throw them at each other... such fun

It was a shame to see Steve Irwin had died but you can be sure that he won't be the last bloke to be stung by something with big flaps that smells of fish.
