That's an interesting article jimbuna.
Distant cover obviously means that in this case the battleships were not inside / part of the convoy.
In fact on one occasion distant meant 1000 miles west!!

If you research you will find many examples of heavy units travelling within the confines of the merchant ranks. This action was performed mainly during daylight hours because of the relatively short range of AA weaponry.

During the evening the heavy units were deemed more vulnerable to U-boat attack (the preferred conditions of a Kaleun) and therefore left the close confines of the convoy whilst allowing more leeway in manouvreability.

Further to jim's post and answer, let me just state that GWX is a game and not reality. Due to restrictions imposed on us by the game engine convoys are much smaller and ships are closer than they were in reality. Therefore some level of poor realism is to be expected (for example it would have been impossible for all the merchants to travel so close to the Battleship if the big guns were to be used etc etc)

In my opinion if we take into account all the complications and restrictions the game engine creates I am happy with the final outcome.
