Nearly 4% of the total world's fleet lying idol and not a U-boat in sight

If you went back in time and told one of the old salts that we had 300,000 tonners, do you think they would even believe you?

We could hit them all at once and take them as prize ships. Imagine the look on the port official at Wilhelmshaven when we report in with our booty, not to mention the WWII U-boat in the lead.

You know, given all the fuss about piracy we were getting last year they probably SHOULD start escorting the stupid things! LOL

When i get home after a long days work and drive down to my apartment by the sea here in Dublin bay, i check out all the idling ships in the bay either waiting to enter Dublin port or taking sanctuary from impending bad weather, and always try to guesstimate their tonnage.

Once this is done I then remind myself that it would be too shallow for a feasible attack, too close to land for comfort and then I consider again; hmmm, Irish navy is hardly worth worrying about. So its upstairs and load up SH3!!

Still never enough SH3 can be had in my books though!

Well i was on a ship 3 years ago for a practice and every time i was on my watch on the bridge, especially at night i was just wondering how anyone could have seen small stiking out of the water steel tube (periscope).

And the other thing is whenever we came across another ship i just made some guesses for a solution.(on radar however it is quite easy, seeing the ships speed ,course and our bearing to it )

Republic of Ireland was neutral in ww2 anyway, so it wouldn't have mattered, none of thsoe ships would count!

Was wondering around Limassol the other day when seeing this made me think the same thing.

My kids practice & play soccer near a small airport. My two-year old son and I always see who can spot planes first. Then I time the planes to see if I could have dived before they were over me.

My wife wonders why my son yells "Alarm" rather than "airplane" whenever he sees one.

Some of you seem surprised at the size of some of these tankers. There are, in fact, at least 4 ULCC's that sport a DWT of at LEAST 500,000 tons.

It staggers me when I sit down and compare numbers from WW2 to modern capability.
