Okay... these tramp steamer/small cargo ships are aggravating my deck-gun crew. Are they all transporting Ping Pong balls?
![]() How do you modify the deck gun please to make it slightly more powerful? ![]() |

Well for starters stop using the deck gun as a primary weapon against merchants. You will fail at sinking many of them.
Your primary weapon is your torpedoes and the deck gun is used to finish off an already wounded ship hit by torpedoes not as a primary sinking tool. If you look historically you will find very few cases of a Uboat only using its deck gun to sink a ship. The deck gun simply was not meant to be used in such a manner.Against the very small targets like tugs and such ships it is effective but go against the merchants and you will have trouble. Always put at least 1 torpedo into a merchant then follow up with the deck gun if needed and on larger merchants 2 torpedoes should be minimum. After that the deck gun can be used to finish off the target with little to no effort or alot of rounds needed. Using the deck gun primarily is not only a waste of ammo but also puts you at bigger risk of being jumped by a destoryer or aircraft that may be patrolling nearby. |

I only use the deck gun in situations where I'm reasonably sure that I won't be bothered by DD's & DE's or aircraft. The situation that I described previously has rarely happened to me before. If a vessel is armed I prefer to be cautious & dispatch it with a torpedo. If I do attack an armed merchant with the deck gun I never go any closer than 2500m.

I think you're right guys. It just galls me to travel for days across the Channel in a Type II bathtub armed with a mere five torpedoes. It didn't help that I became accustomed to the deck gun's previously unrealistic potency.
Hey ho, clearly the crew of U-9 are just impatient for their Type VII upgrade. ![]() |

By May '43, I put my deck gun in the flotilla chief's front yard for use as a flower pot.
![]() Way too many bad experiences trying to take on armed merchants. ![]() ![]()

To the best of my knowledge the Ping Pong balls were on route to Thailand, via the UK, for a newly invented female extreme sport that was being played in bars of questionable repute!!!
