Welcome aboard LtCmdrTwilley. If I remember rightly, in Clear the bridge! He writes that he thought the best place for the gun was aft, so he could use it if being chased and the way he puts it, it seems as if he didn't have a choice in where it was put. He seems to be complaining about the gun being mounted forward.

Ah, I know what you're talking about. The morning that they were chasing the yacht. He mentioned that it provided proof for his argument against having one forward mounted deck gun. At the time, he was propositioning Cdr. Lockwood for a second deck gun. He wanted one mounted aft too. His idea was still shot down later.

AOTD, with his mod FOTRS gives you the option as to where you want your main gun placed...So I'm assuming it can be done.

I rather like an aft deckgun on US subs because the damn hyrrophone head gets in the way at certain angles even though you can still fire and aim the gun some smaller targets like sampans and such can end up behind the hydro head and therefore are diffiacult to aim at. I run TMO163 and they default you with a fore deckgun but in the read me it tells you how to get aft guns back if you so desire. I like the aft deckgun mainly because it seems to be more stable in the back and it is handy to have if something is chasin you. Though if I am in a Baolo or Tench class I will keep the deckgun aft and put a 40mm bofors in the aft AA mount if Im in a Tambor,Gar,Gato I will mount the 40mm fore(if you mount one aft it "clips" with a steel post) and the deckgun aft. But like some others have said I think they mounted deckguns according to the skippers liking unless it was one of the very last war Baolo and Tenchs that had 2 5" 25s mounted then I guess he got just waht he wanted.
