I've had trouble getting the D2D Activation Key to retake. I moved the game to a new computer with Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Besides messing with the Vista-better-way-of-doing-things (?!?), the error message I get when I try to activate the game is "You have entered an invalid Unlock Code:unlock code has invalid format". I wrote the D2D support team 2 days ago and so far I'm SOL, no response yet. If D2D has a count on the number of times one can activate the U-Boat Missions Addon, I may have exceeded it by now with the original key.

Anyway, I'll see if they get back with me soon, waiting 2 days on a trouble ticket with no response is giving me a cold feeling about them. Guess 10 bucks only gets you so far!!

I've said my peace in this forum before regarding having to pay for a patch, I'm not going to step up onto my soapbox now. I recommend the Addon because it does correct some of the problems of SH4. What I've had difficulity with is going along with paying for corrections that are disguised along with additional content (U-Boats in the Pacific). I just don't think the game industry should wring out more money for corrections to a flawed initial release, no matter what "extras" they put with it. And for the D2D to make you jump through hoops after a couple of activations is getting a bit much. God bless them, everyone.

Don't install it beneath Program Files. Just install the Ubisoft directory directly on the root of the drive. Otherwise Vista screws with write attempts on the files. I am running in Vista 64 and no majors issues. Not sure about the D2D but I have reinstalled mine a few times without issue.

Thanks Rip, I'll give that a try.

I know that Vista had pushed the idea of it's "Game" folder being the location for game installs. (I put the SH4 in the default C:\Program\Ubisoft directory.) I'm wondering if that location (the "Game" folder; besides the C:\Ubisoft\Silent..... )would do any better? Since this is a new install, onto a new computer, I've not purchased "new" Vista games that are Microsoft tested and proven to see where they are automatically placed. I wonder if making the file something other than "Read Only" in the "Properties" would help?

Thought I'd give an update on the Direct 2 Drive activation problem I have after trying to install the U-Boat Missions Addon which brings the 1.5 patch to your game. (Sorry JALU3 for appearing to commandeer your thread, but this activation issue goes hand-in-hand with the 1.5 patch)

After Rip's suggestion of
Quote:

I began to think about the specific properties of the Ubisoft folder on the default "Program Files" directory.

I didn't move the Ubisoft directory from the Program Files folder, but I opened the folder with a right click and went to its "Properties" page. Under "Attributes" I unmarked the "Read-only" setting, and hit the "Apply" key to change the properties of the Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific folders and files. This will allow for both "read from" and "write to" action to this specific folder.

I found the shortcut to the "Games" folder in the C:\Users\"Your Name"\Music (?!? is this the folder the "Games Folder" is supposed to be in?) and found the SH4 game had already had a shortcut installed there. I moved the "Games" shortcut folder to my desktop from the "Music" folder and clicked the submarine icon. The game offered the same activation screen with my old activation key so I clicked the "Activate online" option. This time it went though successfully!!!! Yeaaaaaa, progress has been made. The game loaded and I'm back in business with the 1.5 patch installed. I haven't tried launching the game directly through the .exe file of the SH4 directory, but I suspect it will now that D2D was happy to confirm the activation key authenticity.

========================

Revised later this date.

I may be mistaken regarding D2D not helping (and probably fixing the issue). After I puffed out my chest thinking the above "Properties" file changes did the trick, I found that D2D had sent an E-Mail yesterday (Sunday) stating they had fixed the activation key issue on their end and all should be good now!

Well it is!! Probably in spite of my efforts.

Nearly all mods coming these days are made for the 1.5 version. No one puts any energy for the now obsolete 1.4.

My two cents is also thet GWX4 will be based on the 1.5. (Would be quite,...how shall one put it to avoid the Brig........ not doing so)

Graphics Are Fantastic,
Gameplay Is Cartoonish,

Very Disappointing,
A Game Rushed by the Dev Team,
Why They Ever Got Rid Of SH2 On UBI?

There was Never A Need For An Add-on Disc,
Why A Paying 1.5 Add -on?

SH2 May not have the Graphics of today,
But Hey It Kicked Some Ass,
And to Enjoy A Game,
We Need Our Asses Kicked
There are so many wrong facts here I dont know where to begin.

But no german boats is NOT all you get.

Probably the main reason is to get all the up to date patches and to be 'up to date' for all the mods.

The U-boats are there if you want to play with them.

Yes the game was realeased with flaws, what game is not, still the dev's released 4 patches fixing most of the glaring issues promptly.

1.5 at 10 bucks is a good deal by todays standards.

SH2 ... yea I have that too, havent opened it in 4 years.
I agree,Will UBI do to SH3 What they did to SH2?With The Release Of SH5?
Take down The Multiplay Server? We all believe they will,
SH2 & Destroyer Command were so Popular,So Sad,
SH4 was a Rush Release,Lets Hope They Make SH5
as Realistic As Possible for a Simulator Sub Game.

I havent played SH 4 since the very last patch they released STILL makes your sub look and act like its at Disney Land riding on a rail, even if rough seas. Totally ruins the immersion factor for me. I also still have the bug of getting the same patrols assigned over and over and over.....

GWX is the only thing that has kept me coming back to play as a submariner. I would love to play as a US subcommander, but SH4 for me is still broke. At least the talented GWX team salvaged SH3.

If SH5 is as much as a disappointment as SH4 was, then I will be playing GWX for many more years to come.
So True,by the way If you use Vista For Any Game
Be Advised,Run The Game As Administrator To Avoid
Compatability Issues,Hope This Helps.

You know what's really funny?

If SH4 had been released already in 1.5 status and with its price also already increased in those 10$, nobody would be complaining about that :hmm:

Your right!!!

I would have paid $60.00 for the game almost 2 years ago (paid 50.00 March 2007). In doing so I would not have scratched my head to understand why an American Campaign simulation game was released with only Metric measurements!! It's still a stretch to me to call them "Imperial"; in the U.S. we don't, and never have (least ways not since we booted the British). Their called "U.S. Customary Units".

This was just one small aspect of the too early release for Ubi. And why did they do it? To make a buck!! To see a return on their advertisement dollor, that had promoted the game for months throughout 2006. Making a profit is fine with me, but don't take advantage of the consumer's good nature by selling an unfinished product and draging out the corrections for the next 2 years. With some of them costing extra!!
