I'm pretty sure, however, that has more to do with the fact that he's Arnold than the fact he's republican.

Although perhaps Palin should consider a career in macho action movie roles

Well, I might be not American, but I really don't get her appeal either - well, to be sure, I definitely get her appeal to the staunchly conservative types, but I'm a bit skeptical on centrist democrats swinging her way. As I recall, Schwarzenegger is far, far more toward the center than she'd ever be, and makes a lot more sense as a political choice goes for that demographic...

The part you are missing - McCain is far far to left to be called a Republican over here, so Palins appeal comes from the fact that she rounds out McCain in an area he needed big help! Besides, she is a woman and about to make history!
