the thing is now I know how long it take to make a sub remotely playable... like the Ko Hyoteki fro instance, took me hours, people seemed to want it too, but when they played and realised that they only had a couple torpedoes ...

The only fun thing is that it's fast underwater : 19 knots !, so now I think about it before I start on a sub, maybe if the japanese I-Boats carried a few mines like their american counterparts, but I don't know...

In terms of picking subs to model, I think I'd err on the side of what saw the most actual use by the IJN in terms of combat (not resupply).

I guess my Jyunsen B, type AM, Kaidai 4 and Kaichu mod version 3.0 pretty much covers it then...

I'd still love to get my hands on the I-52 3d model though...

btw the normal ijn subs did lay mines :

Default found on ebay

A 1920 japanese book on submarines, looks like a minelayer to me !
good blueprint ?

[edit] just won it on ebay I hope the blueprint is good enough to make the sub, but I thought minelaying subs also had torpedo tubes ?

btw if anyone can help translating the text and captions... thanks,

keltos

Keltos01 san,
I'll get my Japanese friends to work on the 1920s blueprint for you and hack out a rough translation.

Anything to help the Kaiten man!

PS For the campaign: Hachijo jima, in the Izu group about 300km south of Tokyo Bay, was full of Kaiten and raring to from mid 44. The main Kaiten training base at Kure (south of Hiroshima) was alos loaded up and raring to go. Unfortunately for the Japanese, the Shinano was transfering a hold full of Kaiten when she was sunk, otherwise several ports in southern Kyushu would have been similarly armed.

PPS Any chance of Tokko surface craft? Suicidal motor boats filled with explosives?

fired from a sub ????

it would mean : a 3D model of such a craft, replacing a torpedo model with it, setting depth to 0, but would be unrealistic wouldn't it be ?

more of a shore battery shell being transformed into a suicide craft, but anyways, this is the mines thread... post it on the kaiten thread then.

and welcome to subsim !

keltos

ps
my list to Santa - san :

any detailed blueprints (KRS minelaying sub - type C1, C2 submarine, Kaidai...) more than welcome.

good pictures of said subs for the 3D models

thanks Darkfish for your mine files and welcome to the team !

we will now try and set up the Type 93 naval mine mod for the IJN

keltos

Rear AdmiralDavid Farragut's famous statement, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" refers to a minefield laid at Mobile, Alabama. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_mine)

Default IJN submarine-laid mine types

IJN submarine-laid mine types

dammage :

naval mine stock mine
436,30137 200
704,794521 320
335,616438 0
6,71232877 2
8,39041096 40

I used the same table as for my torpedoes to compute the explosive power of the IJN mines (1960 lbs of type 97 explosive)
