something similar happened to my friend tom, when trying to infiltrate scapa flow. His boat, U-46 (one under Gunther Prien's boat, which was what inspired him to make an attempt at the base), made it past the scottish air patrols and the destroyer screens and was only a few yards from the harbor, when a trawler depth charged him. He freaked out and dove, IN SHALLOW WATER! The nose of his boat hit the bottom and it began to flood. Another depth charge attack from the trawler would spell death for him.

one tactic i have used once or twice against trawlers is to let them pass me, surface when his back is to you and his main wep cannot train on you and man the deck gun as quick as possible and fire off a shell or two, and TRY to hit him in a vital area...if it takes too long and the trawler is now turned into a position to start lobing shells at you, say ur prayers. lol

Can't you outrun them on the surface? I thought they had a max speed of 15 kts? Good to know that patrol boats don't have even passive sonar. They're pesky little things, especially when they travel in groups!

I recently tried to shoot two trawlers, submerged, in heavy seas, but missed both. They were, surprisingly, the entirety of a Task Force! Was hoping for something a bit more substantial, but oh well. The Save Game Bug ate that part of the mission any how.

I managed to outrun a trawler with my Ix-b boat in calm waters at 19 knts ! but i was firing with 37 cm AA gun and deck gun to the enemy.

lessons learned:

Stay stealth in shallow waters, keep an eye in your Uzo for targets, and search lights at night.

Dive inmediatelly when you detect a danger and try to put some distance between you and they.

Run silent, until when the ashcans are over you, then make a sharp turn at flank speed and try to go to deeper waters.
