At the time in WWI, the Pour le mérite was the highest decoration that Prussia could award. Off the top of my head I think that only 2000 were awarded during the course of the war, compared to estimated 7000 Knights Cross in WWII. It would be more comprable to Oak leaves which there were 881 awarded, and only 159 with swords.

The IC 1st class also has some variations that you would need to factor in. For someone in WWI that had received it previously it would have the date 1874 on it, so there would be a badge that would be put on top of it with 1914 on it. Same with WWII, if the soldier had recieved a IC 1st in WWI they had another badge worn above it with 1939 on it.

By the time WWII came around, most of the reciepients of the Pour le mérite were generals or higher by the start of WWII. Only a few people like Adolf Galland (who still scored 104 planes shot down) actually served on the front lines.

I guess since I collect WWII German militaria the medal system in SHIII frustrates me so much. I understand there needs to be a tangible milestone in which to make the award available, they just didn't do their homework very well. The combat clasp in gold always has rubbed me wrong, it didn't even became available until 1944, and only was awarded in bronze and silver. Thank god for SHIII Commander by allowing you the option of handing out awards based on your own criteria and not how much tonnage you sink per patrol.

Couldn't find an image. Probably a revised version of the WWII award would do the trick, though
this site has it, and much more here
