Welcome to the Ubootwaffe, hammer-princess!

You'll find your fellow Kaleus here to be a rather motley crew but I suppose spending half of your time submerged inside a sardine can will make anyone a little goofy.

Take your time to get excellent marks in the Naval Academy (Ausbildungsgruppe für Front-U-Boote). Getting your skills polished there will pay off in a big way once you're assigned to a front line flotilla (frontflotille) and out there with the Tommies hunting you. The final test, Convoy Attack, was a challenge but also a lot of fun.

Don't worry about your poor aim when shooting at aircraft. Either keep practicing until you figure out how far ahead to lead your shots or just let your crew do it for you. Planes that fly high and/or fast need a lot of lead, so aim ahead further than you think. Fire in short bursts rather than emptying a clip all at once. Doing so will conserve ammo and prevent the recoil from throwing your aim off too much. If you have a Petty Officer that is certified for Flak, then he's likely to be a better shot than you are!

That being said, as your fellow sailors have already said so often, it is much more prudent to dive to safety (around 20-40 meters) than to slug it out with something that moves about 100 times faster than you and has many more guns with plenty of bombs to drop on your head as well!

Be careful using Crash Dive! If the water is 70m or less in depth, you may hit bottom and damage your boat unless you act fast to order a different depth. The standard depth for crash dive is 70 meters.

The best way to dive quickly if you're expecting to face constant aircraft patrols is to run with decks awash at around 7-8m so only your conning tower is exposed. Diving only takes seconds that way, but it does slow your boat down and consumes more fuel. If you have a full watch crew on duty, they can usually spot an aircraft in time to allow a normal dive.

Be careful using time compression. If you suspect you're near enemy ships, a high TC setting can actually have them right on top of you before you get the chance to react. That explains many posts you'll read when a Kaleun says how "They came out of nowhere and just started shooting!".

I suppose I should stop here before I end up writing a book, "U-Boat Warfare For Dummies" (available at second-hand bookstores everywhere). :p

I'll leave you with best wishes for a successful career and the U-Boat sailor's motto...

"Clear skies and a heart of gold!"

What to say... all been said allready. These &%$# planes are like mosquitoes in your tent at night - you hear it, it bites, you bleed, but there's no way to get rid of it unless you burn whole the damn tent with you inside.

Welcome aboard! Not much I can add about aircraft; they've pretty much said it all. I think the whole reason for having that flak tutorial is to get the point across early that you shouldn't ever try slugging it out with planes! :p

Welcome mate

About planes... It depends at that what version of shIII you playin... If its only sh3 1.4b you can shot them like a ducks, its really easy i never get a major damage from plane on 1.4b. But... If you use mods like GWX i advise you TO HIT 'C' button as fast as you can when you will hear 'Flugzeug gesichted!'

I hope you will fall in love with SHIII like the rest of ppl here...

Hi and welcome hammer-princess,

You've chosen by far the best forum imo for the best resources and info about Silent Hunter III.

I wish you all the best in your patrols and hope you make some good friends as I have.

Sincerely,
