What I thought was strange was having two bulkheads damaged, pumps damaged, flooding and my Hull integrity still at 0%. I guess the hull itself didn't take any damage or something.

There are 2 radii for DCs. Min and Max. Up to min, the hull itself takes damage which is cumulative. Between min and max, internal systems take damage under the right conditions.

My rule of thumb is 50% and I'm heading back.

I'll second that. I doubt any skipper would risk his boat (and his CREW, let's not forget that aspect of this game gents!) with his main fighting weapon at 50% (or worse) capability.
If I'm not mistaken, on the army side, a company/battalion etc, if possible, was pulled out of the line if it was at 50% or less effective strength as it was considered non-effective.

You have to close the hatches before you dive.

Seriously though I found out if you return for repairs ( and are not finished with mission ) at home base that you will not get repairs, only torps and ammo. You must abort the mission before you can have your subs hull repaired.
Just hope the ole man ( Admiral ) doesn't get pissed or you'll be on a desk job pushing a pencil.

I did this once since 1.4 as I got a walloping about 300nm from home base and had 68% of the hull shot up. went to base and clicked on "Refit" only to have all torps + ammo but the hull was NOT fixed. Had to abort.

I think that just sucks, but I can live with it.

Yes, you have to DOCK not refit at major base to get the sub hull repaired. If you don't get a dock option when the anchor icon appears or you get the refit/postpone option , you cannot fix the hull or major components there.
