Back on topic ..... here is a one minute video on what and how HP is going to market it. Saw some pictures of it. It is about 14" inches in diameter, yea a round computer box, about 9 inches tall. Only Ports on it are power, network card 1-gig, and 6 USB ports. That's it. no video, keyboard, or mouse ports. The video you are watching resides on my Home Server.

Well, I got the web site done on our Windows Home Server - that is WHY I am not around too much and gaming in SH3 and/or SH4 is on hold. (Oops forget Shells of Fury, too. I am working my way through the training missions - looks like a real FUN game.)
Here it is: www.LearnABit.net Not bad for my FIRST try, ever, in my life! And, not bad for an old girl of 54? And it was so easy once I understood how all the "things" interact. I welcome your comments and/or criticism from anyone. Either way - good or bad, your comments will help me in the long run. Thanks for looking at it, and Thank You for your time, too! I have 21 customers out of a pool of 1,000+ signed up to get a Windows Home Server - things are starting to look good after a 2 year slump of going down the drain (our business). p.s.: I can use some help getting one of those counters to work on how many people visited the site. I have spent hours trying to get it to work and have gotten NO WHERE. Quote:

Just figured out something REAL COOL you can do with the Windows Home Server using the Whiist add-in. Whiist is a Windows Home Server Add-In that allows you to create and manage UNLIMITED websites on your WHS - Windows Home Server.
So I created one called "photos" in a folder called websites. Copied and pasted the three folders I wanted to share with you. No more b.s. posts of " " and all that jazz. I just give YOU this link: http://learnabit.homeserver.com/photos And you get to look at each picture. This is going to be a life saver of no more emails with photo attachment b.s. to friends/family. - Kitchen Roof Leak Photos of me riping apart our kitchen ceiling to remove the damaged drywall from a BAD roof leak. Did this in August, 2007. Took a week on and off. - Laundry Room Project Had the water pipe that goes through this room that feeds the rear yard outside water faucet freeze and burst last winter. Took a hammer and busted open the wall to fix the pipe and shutoff. Fixed the pipe and replaced the "so called" frost free shut off valve. Then said - to hell with and junked the entire room - EVERYTHING - even the appliances. If you look hard enough, you can see the CRAPPY JOB I did on those shut off valves up in the 1st floor rafters. I scorched them pretty good with the torch. ![]() -Woodhaven This is my entire collection of photos of my get-away-place on a lake about 82 miles west of the house.

Windows Home Server has major problems right now. Carefull what you do with it, you can corrupt it rather easiliy I hear right now. Microsoft is aware of the problem and should have a major patch out for it soon.

Windows Home Server bug corrupts files
You fell for this b.s. from the press too , egh? Yes, it's a set back, but... Yea, I saw this posted a week ago or so. I have ditched that problem by deciding to use WHS for: 1. Backup of all PC's in the house - runs like a champ! 2. All My files/Spouse's files reside locally on our PC's/laptops and get edited/created there on the individual local PC. 3. I created a DOS batch file [any one remember those let alone write one? ;-) ] to dump a spare copy of our My Docs folders onto the server. Later added it to the Task Scheduler to automate the process once a day. I never edit them, never plan to edit ANY file off the server. 4. With Folder Duplication automatically turned on the server a THIRD copy of any document/file/folder is put on the External USB hard drive on the server. I decided from day one that I am >NOT< going to trust Microsoft and relocate all my data to reside on the server. A copy or two or three of my data/files/folders - Yes, I trust it. So if you are using WHS for backup and web site hosting, this article is like yelling "fire" in a theatre. You should spend more time here before making any further negative posts about WHS since you don't own/use it: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsH...3912&SiteID=50

I might suggest that as a computer company, that you ditch the aol email account and use the email addy provided to you by your ISP...companies will take you more seriously. Lastly, with your website, you've got one item that catches my attention regarding your menu. A simple HTML programming issue of your 'services' link is always highlighted. |

So, let me see - when MS says its true - http://support.microsoft.com/default...-us?spid=12624 - You say its press BS?
![]() By the way, I wasn't here to flame you, just warn you. And you shouldn't need to make backups of backups of backups just to be safe from file corruption last time I checked! Only people with a server problem or people with a paranoia problem need to do this! :rotfl: I'm just giving you a hard time by the way. I'm glad you like WHS, but I can't resist! -S PS. A server should be able to do anything you require of it for managing data. I'd seriously look at Small Biz Server from MS, or Linux as alternatives if you want a quick fix. |

I would agree with SUBMAN1!
SBS is like the all-in-one server for a small business. It has all the other servers like exchange, ISA, and SQL rolled into one. As for your website, I might suggest looking at Joomla! |

Turns out that you MIGHT have this problem IF you have MULTIPLE INTERNAL hard drives in the server box. IF you are running running a SINGLE internal hard drive, the problem (data file corruption) does NOT happen. I have a SINGLE hard drive - 500 gig and an external 500-gig USB drive for folder duplication. More news came out this week that it looks like the ONLY manufacturer that FOR SURE has this problem is HP. Seems their [HP's] new SmartMedia Box (with Windows Home Server running it) can also have Internet "press" stories yelling "the end is near - your data is screwed". Yet there is no such story from the press. Furthermore, HP published a 6-7 paragraph notice or warning customers and now it looks like a combination of software and certain HP hardware has certain people at HP with egg on their face. No one mentions that HP re-tracted the 6-7 paragraph original document warning and replaced it with a vague one paragraph notice. So where is the negative comments against HP, Egh? ............ I digress ..... some marbles got lost in that rant. So sorry about that bubba - the torch :p ... Anyway: In the last week I finally got through the thick skull of mine how to do the video, music, and picture streaming from the server to all the PCs. Man is it easy once you find the right add-on to do it. I am starting the slow process of ripping our DVD collection on to the server - we only have one DVD player in the house hooked up to a TV tube, so this is going to make life MUCH nicer. First one I ripped was of course Das Boot. I am currently back ordered at the local libray to get Run Silent Run Deep. My offer still stands to anyone here. If we can get on to a common Team Speak Server it eliminates the need for us to use a phone/cell phone. I will give you a grand tour of this GREAT product by giving you the keys to the house - the Admin account and password. You can then see it first hand before you take the plunge. I am convinced that for 2008 that this product will end up being the sleeping giant that almost everyone will want to have in their house assuming two or more PCS. Hopefully will hear from someone here someday - take care - good hunting in SH3 or SH4!

Personally, I think you are taking the GT forum way too seriously. If someone post a news report on a topic that refutes yours, don't get all in a dither. We are just offering other options and opinions. Like our suggestions of Small Business Server and my suggestion of you getting Joomla! for your website. I'm on crappy dial-up, so won't waste my time to even attempt to connect to you as it takes forever just to load pages. |
