We are not at war with inhabitants of the Netherland East Indies and Philippine Islands. The destruction of their craft does the enemy little or no harm and is forbidden."

On the other hand this was the same guy who defended the defective magnetic detonators on USN torpedoes.

If you are in the 30th flot. you should sink any and all Russian ships. They used whatever ship, boat, vessel they found to ferry troops and supply's with.
The C/38 Zwilling is perfect for shooting fishing boats and the like to pieces, and planes

Telling me, I remember sinking the HOOD and on my next patrol I came across her again.

I only target big stuff and leave the little stuff alone.

The British used trawlers and the like to ferry secret agents and resistance members to Norway, the so called Shetland Express or Shetland Bus. So whenever im in the North Sea and spot a fishingboat etc I sink it (by either flak or ramming)

So, do local fishing boats/trawlers actually call-in their sub sightings in SH3? And if they do simulate calls on your position, does this then have the big guys come running for your location? :hmm:

If your an enemy....yes, there is a chance assistance will be called upon.
The level of response is down to factors such as the closeness of any surface vessels and the distance to the nearest airbase.

I don't know any numbers from WWII, but german u-boats supposedly sank 675 British trawlers between 1914 and 1918, killing 434 fisherman in the process (almost all sunk by gunfire, but at least one by ramming).

A fishing trawler was even used as bait by HM submarine C24 to lure U-40 into torpedo range in 1915 (the tactic was to tow the British sub with the trawler, and lure the U-boat into a quick torpedo kill).

Anyone know any actual figures for attacks/losses of fishing boats in UK waters during WWII?

hmmm, I have passed up each and every fishing boat or trawler that I came across.
In the IIA/D sub you only have the puny pop gun which is next to worthless. Usually the weather is stinko so I couldn't get a crew on the gun anyway.

Now with the VIIB boat I do have a gun, but the ones I saw along the coast of Norway were in a high wave condition so I couldn't gun em anyway.

My Uncle Ray Thomason was a fisherman out of Petesberg, Alaska "The Shirley" and I knew to many fisherman....Be really hard for me to sink a fishing boat...Even in "just-a-game".

Don't bother with them, Regardless of what Doenitz says.

The German fighting men won a reputation in WWI ,and to an extent WWII, of not only being very efficiant and deadly soldiers. But also to be rather gentlemanly, Trawlers and fishing boats are of no military value and their meagre tonnage are not worth the stain on your honour.

Plus for practical reasons it's a waste of ammo, And wasting time, fuel, chasing and sinking them instead of searching for proper targets as well as having as much ammunition available to sink them. And last but certainly not least, why have a boat spot you and call you in for 50 tons worth of shipping. That's a lousy deal.

For me it's just a freakin' game. If it floats and doesn't fly my flag it's going to the bottom, unless it's a neutral or I'm out of ammo.

Screw neutrals I sunk three American Tankers today July41.

I was awarded the Iron Cross First Class for it.
