Again, the game reflects real life better than the "workarounds". In real life a crash dive includes flooding the tanks fully for full negative bouyancy to get under faster, and retrimming on the way down, which means you are going to end up a lot deeper. If they were in shallow water they had to judge carefully and only flood to neutral bouyancy, meaning the dive was slower, or "normal".
You might as well call the workarounds cheats, because that's something they couldn't do.
