Yes, by all means, send the useful idiot back.
In any case, Johnston says I don't think so.

EDIT: Source.

Maybe he just muttered the wrong thing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That's why I always carry around the following on a piece of paper. You'll never know when you might wind up getting stuck in these parts!
The following are useful phrases to know when
travelling in the mideast:

Akbar khali haftir - Thank you for showing me your
lovely gun.

Gabul gardan davat - I am delighted to accept your
offer to lie down on the floor with my arms above my
head and my legs crossed.

Tamomeh gofteh - I agree with everythig you have ever
said or thought in your life.

Mano sepameh hast achman al hum - It is exceptionally
kind of you to allow me to travel in the trunk of your
car.

Fashal el degat gof tam de la la - If you will do me
the kindness of not harming my genital appendages I
will gladly reciprocate by betraying my country in
public.

Maneh va jabil bis me allah - I will tell you the names
and addresses of many American spies traveling as
reporters.

Bali Balli Ballii - Whatever you say!

Gher mez ghor han el hum - The red blind fold would be
lovely, excellency.

Tineck ba ob khrellen va ino emir massa noir - The
water-soaked bread crumbs are delicious, thank you. I
must have the recipe.

No. Captured and freed lands, done in a defensive war whose aim was to annihilate Israel.

Though they were in fact previously occupied by Egyptians, Jordanians, Turks, Crusaders, Muslims and Romans.

Listen, the man put himself in harms way. Good for him that he was released, but, he knew the risk going in. I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for the press.

The man made his choice.

1) He isn't "the press". "The press" is a vastly broad and varied group of reporters, investigators, recherchers, presenters etc. ad infinum. Not to have sympathy for any individual human because they are in the press is a crazy stance to take!

2) It is because he put him self in harms way, despite knowing the risk, that we should have sympathy for him. He did not need to go to a conflict zone to earn a living and we must be thankful that people like him have the steel to report in places like this or we would be much less informed about these areas.

My understanding is that he will not return to the region. Perhaps he didn't think it out before he went there to begin with. Not all humans are bright.

He said he would not return "in the near future".
I really don't think you can study the area and report on it for so long, including reporting on the kidnapping of other journalists, with out knowing the risk to your self!
I think anyone would want a less stressful occupation for a few years after a kidnapp.

Yes. The US has a voluntary military. No one is conscripted.
