Your DRAM is rated upto 3200 yet your processor is running @ 3400!

I imaging that the 11x200 the FSB speed and multiplier.
If so that is very slow. with PC3200 DRAM you should be able to get that upto 400.
and then reduce the multipler to approx 5. This should give a procesor clock of 3200.

Your machine should seem faster, more stable and hopefully SH3 will ident the processor correctly.

The speed is correct (I think), mine is an AMD 64 3700+ running at 2.37Ghz, by default the clock is supposed to be 200mhz but running at 215, the FSB is 407mhz at this setting, your system should work! If it were me I would do:
1) Since you only have 512mb of ram I would make sure you had nothing running in background.
2) A re-install of SHIII.
3) Take a drastic step to make a note of bios settings then set to factory default, save & retest.

Just found this, if it helps:

Quote:
Once you are in the BIOS, assuming that you have a BIOS that supports overclocking*, you should have access to all of the settings needed to overclock your system. The settings that you will most likely be adjusting are:

Multiplier, FSB, RAM Timings, RAM Speed, and RAM Ratio.

On a very basic level, all you are trying to do is to get the highest FSB x Multiplier formula that you can achieve. The easiest way to do this is to just raise the multiplier, but that will not work on most processors since the multiplier is locked. The next method is to simply raise the FSB. This is pretty self explanatory, and all of the RAM issues that have to be dealt with when raising the FSB will be explained below. Once you've found the speed at which the CPU won't go any faster, you have one more option.

If you really want to push your system to the limit, you can try lowering the multiplier in order to raise the FSB even higher. In order to understand this, imagine that you have a 2.0GHz processor that has a 200MHz FSB and a 10x multiplier. So 200MHz x 10=2.0GHz. Obviously, that equation works, but there are other ways to get to 2.0GHz. You could raise the multiplier to 20 and lower the FSB to 100MHz, or you could raise the FSB to 250MHz and lower the multiplier to 8. Both of those combinations would give you the same 2.0GHz that you started out with. So both of those combinations should give you the same system performance, right?

ill give it a go.is overclocking reversable?

man it shouldnt take all this just to run a game.according to the machine and the game requirements it should run.i wish these things were simpler.im getting tired of computers.

thanks for the advice

Yes it's reversable. All you are doing is effectively changing values in your bios. Make notes about your changes and if needed you can set them back to the originals. As with all overclocking, urge on the side of caution and progress slowly.

I suspect you are having to do this because your system has autoclocked itself down after a hardware change. That or your hardware is incompatible.

I hope you read this first!
If you do overclock, the machine may freeze before booting into the bios, if this happens you should have a shorting link on the motherboard to set the bios back to default, otherwise you can remove the small battery, wiat for a half minute then put back in, I have had to do this a couple of times when I pushed the old girl a bit too far!!

"Cannot initialize 3d engine" is usually a DirectX or driver issue.

Can you run the output from dxdiag.exe, and paste that in a reply, here? Whole thing. That lets us see the driver versions on your various components, as well as DirectX versions.

Would it be best to sort my fan out first as i am getting heat related crashes lately i think the fan is on the blink.

is this a likely cause of random crashes-shutdowns?

if so wou;ldnt it be best to sort that befor starting overclocking?.

I'd say that's a "no kidding". You need to make sure you have the latest drivers from ATI (for Radeon video cards) or nVidia (for GeForce cards).

Default my cpu etc.

Hi Abbafan, been following your saga in attempting to get SH3 up & running. One of my computers has almost the same spec's as yours with the exception of the video card ,mine is a geforce 7800 gtx 256mb & 2gb ddr system ram.I,m a little confused as to which video card your running is it a gf 6200 or a gf 7800?Either way both those cards should be able to run SH3 including GWX V 1.03 if set up properly.I would open the case & check for looose connections & if your video card is properly set & the fan is working. If so I would go to the Nvidia site & download the latest drivers for your card.I noticed your monitor setting is 800x600,I would reset it at 1024x768.One final question do you have any other high graphic content sims? if so do they run ok or is it only SH3 thats giving you problems? Cody
