Those systems aren't reliable yet. The facilities built are large-scale development programs still trying to make the system effective.

This is a weapon to engage ballistic missiles in their boost phase (that is, when the rocket is just leaving the pad and heading on it's way up out of the atmosphere. It does not engage the re-entry warheads, nor does it engage smaller missiles/rockets (like AIM-9 Sidewinders and such. It only is for the "big stuff"). The laser has an extremely long range (over 1,000 miles, I belive) and pinpoint accuracy (according to the reports).

They are to be deployed in one or two-plane groups around ICBM "hotspots" (Like around NK's Rocket-launch area on Korea's eastern coast. It is to be the "second layer of defence" for ICBMs.

The layers being:

1. Destroying the rocket while it is still on the ground; first-strike
2. The ABL system to destroy the rocket on it's way up.
3. (possibly still experimental) ABM Satillites in orbit.
4. THADD
5. Patriot Missiles/ABM Standard Missiles
6. Just about anything that can shoot a projectile or otherwise upwards in a last-ditch effort.:p

How could I forget? I like this kind of stuff, too.

Edited (along with Tchocky's response; he was correct in "negotiations; shout at it," too).

Agreed that the system is still developmental, but the ground-based interceptors are nonetheless operational, in silos, and under military command. They have successfully shotdown target warheads in midcourse. The airborne laser, on the other hand, won't have its first shoot-down test for a few years yet.

One of the coolest laser weapons i've seen is a scanning laser working like an advanced echo sounder. Mounted on a plane and with some complicated signal prossesing it was able see a car parked in a dense forest with impressive resolution. Perhaps this is something like that?

It just looks very impressive and it has something to do with lasers (which are inherently woo).

When I saw the photo posted by Letum, a caption came to me...

"So this laser treatment will fix my eyes???"

Current Laser guidince systems can do that! Infact if you hit someone with one of those for long enugph you can no only blind them but make their eyes explode.

Some of our pilots did that to cows over Bosnia.
