thanks for the info

personally I like the Type XXI more than any other - from it's looks alone you can tell it is miles ahead of it's nearest rivals and built for a specific purpose: Silent Run! The only problem with the boot is it's time - if you play it realistically you get the boot right near the end - and if you play on 100% realism you have a hard enough time getting into your patrol area, let alone enjoy the ride

After looking through this thread, I think I will definately need to take the XXI out for a spin.

The XXI was really a fantastic boat for its time. To bad (in a way) it came out too late for really demonstrating its capabilities.

I found a irl picture similar to the one above some time ago, to bad I can't figure out which site I found it on though.

IIRC this certain photo has been taken in Bergen, and thatlight grey XXI in the middle is U 2511, taken in .. May 1945 ? Not sure about the date though.

Personally, I like XXI so very much... Sure, freankly telling I like ALL the Boats I can be given command, but XXI is just the final bonus in a carrer
At last you have a sub capable of entering a convoy and destroying it, with all the ASW vessels circulating helplessly around sinking ships. It brings even more satisfactoin than some actions made early in the war - I mean, you know there are much more DDs around and they are expierienced. And even though, they can be so ineffective !

On the other hand, there`s one great enemy within you: self overconfidence. Early in the war, you can get in serious trouble only if you were taking high risk or were making something really stupid. Still, on many occasions DDs are easy to deceive and lose contact. In 1945, DDs are much more accurat and if you make an error, they`ll most likely benefit. And once they lock on you, they`re difficult to loose.

Correct.
But this Uboat can have some nice tricks up it's sleeve.
- It can be equipped with the Bold3 decoys, with a life-time of 8-10mins.
- I tested the max depth at which the torpedo-tubes can be opened: 49m! (GWX 1.03)
- Combine these 2 with T-V accoustically guided torpedoes (target-speed must be >10kts)...

Next test will be to see, how these decoys eventually are able to attrackt T-V's
I need to know lol.

You`re right of course
I meant more you can make something wrong and get detected and hunt. You have big chances, but still good silent running, T-V and decoys don`t make you invincible - personally I prefer a tactics that allows me to get inside the convoy, run havoc and get out with minimum escort reaction.

I find this a bit disturbing: can't use the flak-guns in rough weather.
Perfectly understandable for other subs...but in the XXI, the gunners are in an enclosed turret.
How can I make it so the gunners will work?

possible bug: when I order crash-dive, the forward diving-planes don't extract...so when trying to surface afterwards, the boat has troubles keeping the nose up.
Need to test it further, though.

Go into the subs basic cfg file and alter the bad weather guns to '99'

Jimbuna, I couldn't find any entry like that for the XXI anywhere.
So I used an old badweatherguns-mod I still had on my HD, to take a look at what needed to be changed.

Found out, that I had to change a value in NSS_Uboat21.cfg.
So I made a special mini-mod, just for the TypeXXI, JSGME-ready.
If anyone wants it, get it here.
I hope it works...gotta wait untill this evening, to test it.

Still thx for the reply, mate...it made me realize, that I had some badweatherguns-mod somewhere.

I've taken the XXI to war from Bergen before, used SH3cmdr to get it, my, what a boat! On my first trip out of port I spotted an Illustrious class carrier surrounded by DD's. I put 4 fish in the carrier and fired two acoustic homing fish at the DD's which were turning to intercept me...boom...boom...both gone, 1knot silent running its a dream...you can barely hear it even when your right next to the props! I have to admit though I did get caught later after hitting a convoy. I had about 5 friends circling above...splash splsh...BOOM, sank like a brick got some screens will post them later.

Heres the pic...pretty big hole in the front! No wonder she went down so quickly. Btw I don't know if its me, but its pretty hard to get it level going slow. at 2-3knots she just keeps going down even with no damage, as if theres not enough air to keep her afloat. I have to increase speed to about 5knots for her to level off, pretty bad when your diving away from DD's near crush depth!
