Well ill advised as it may be to take on a pair of carriers with a three inch
I do love the Elan involved in attempting to finish the job by ramming.

I dont know if its modeled or not but Mk14's were notoriusly flakey in shallow water.
Yeah, but that's the thing - the water wasn't shallow, there is a deep section in the harbor, I had over 100ft beneath the keel at periscope depth and that's where both ships were anchored. They weren't docked, but anchored in the middle of the harbor in the only deep water around.

I sunk a carrier in a night surface battle using the dual deck guns of a 1944 Gato class boat. Takes less rounds then a light cruiser, because there was a CL escorting the carrier.

Even though the game offers the possibility to sink fleet carriers with subs guns it's nowhere near reality. Even older carriers offered some sort of belt protection, which would have been enough to withstand fire from 3in guns, Essex Class carriers had armor belts with a thickness of 2.5" to 4" (like heavy cruisers, Graf Spee, for example, had had a 3in belt armor, Baltimore Class cruisers had 4in to 6in). Even 4in shells would have hardly been able to penetrate that armor.

More important is that all carriers were armed with dual purpose guns, early carriers even with 6in or 8in guns. These guns are in the game, but aren't used against the player's sub for some strange reason. However, in reality, concentrated fire from 4, 6, 8 or even more guns of 5in, 5.25in, 6in or even 8in calibre would have caused a mess to your sub long before you'd have even been able to come close to the carrier.

I agree 100% on your information, Ostfriese.
this "some strange reason" is the fact, that carriers using its guns will make this game more like a sim, and sims don't sell so good as shooters do. Ubi wants to make profit and an average kiddie who allows them to make the largest sales want to sunk the whole japanese fleet in a single patrol. Simulations are simply boring to someone who isn't a simfreak.

Did you say DUAL guns?

There's a sub with two guns on it? Is it just the gato?
