Still, I was offered a Gato, and I accepted it. Aside from the increase in torpedo tubes and general number of torpedos, doesn't seem to be that much better but at least I can now have crew in the deckgun slots. My old Porpoise couldn't have the guns manned, per say, I had to fire it myself. Still not used to all the different names of the subs, instead of the nice old Type IXB or VII. Did hydrophones really not work above 20 meters on these subs? That sure seems like a bug. Pretty annoying one too. Well, before I go on my next patrol, could someone recommend a good spot for hunting? I swear, if I see another Sampan in this lifetime, it will be far too soon.

Well, that was a fairly good patrol. My fourth apparently, not my third. I got constantly attacked by Zeros and Betties in between Midway and Pearl. It's 1942, May I think. Leftovers from the battle there I gathered, looked to see if I could find the source of the them, but no luck.
Another drop off supplies objective in the Phillipine(sp?) Islands. I ran into a nice, juicy convoy quite a ways south of Midway. I used up my entire forward supply of torpedos and one torpedo from the aft. Still, I did every merchant in the convoy. I haven't a clue what kinda drugs the DD escorts were on, but I definately want some. They just were totally blind and stupid. A little over a thousands meters off and they didn't see my periscope. Odd. Anyway, got to my objective. Surfaced and moved in, launched the raft. Then promptly reversed over it and sank it. I'd assume the thing was being launched from the bow, not from the aft. So when I backed up out to turn around and head back to Pearl, I noticed the blue sunken friendly icon. Not that the game cared of course, my mission objective read completed. On the way back to Pearl, encountered a task force, composed of three DD escorts and two passenger liners. Easy pickings. I used up the torpedos I had left in the aft to sink both of them. Again, the DDs barely seemed to notice that the ships they were escorting had just been sunk. Continued on to Pearl, getting buzzed by Zeros, Betties and Emiles the whole back practically. My poor flak gunner ran out of ammo, so I had to submerge after that. Slowed down the return trip, but I made it back in one piece. Oh, and had a shootout with a Medium Composite Freighter. No visible damage to my ship. On returning to base, I got the exact same medal I get every time I return from a patrol. Navy medal, I think it was. For completing 0 patrols, in 1941 and with my old Porpoise to boot, even though I'm in a Gato now. Something is definately screwed up there. Hoping for some radar or new torpedos. Something. But nope. No new upgrades since I began the career. I still got that useless SD radar and surface radar. Oh, and a ton of purple hearts, even though none of my crew was actually wounded. Erm. Anyway. That was kinda long winded. Sorry

Anyone have any ideas why my campaign seems to be so screwed up or are these known issues that I described in my last post?
Restart it or should I just wait for the patch?

Don't know if it's screwed up.
AFAIK the special forces boat and the other insertion boats all "take off" at the front end, perhaps there was some forward motion on the sub. It can take quite a while for the sub to be at speed 0 after hitting "all stop". The new radar equipment, new types of torpedoes etc will get along as time passes, just sit that out. AI behaviour is discussed in various threads on this forum. I suggest if you want really deadly DD behaviour, to consider the Tmaru mod made by ducimus. It's a sticky in the mod forum. Don't know why the medal thing happened. There is a mod for this in the mod forum as well. Concerning the aircraft attacks; It is advisable to crash dive when an a/c is spotted. Fighting it out with these guys can be reason enough for a new career. Last but not least; the 1.3 patch should be clearing a lot of faults/flaws in the game. They said it's a matter of weeks before it's released, keeping fingers crossed. Regards Bando |

So the upgrades are working properly? They didn't have any surface radar in '42 yet? That's a pain but no big deal. I'm definately gonna try the mod you mentioned. At least the AI part anyway.
No idea about the medals, wish I had a screenshot of it. Pretty weird. I got promoted after my last patrol too, apparently but there wasn't any indication that I did, I only noticed it in the patrol log "Rank increase" stated at the bottom. I'm not overly concerned with the air attacks, it's always a single plane and it always gets the crap blown out of it before it can drop it's bombload and the strafing didn't seem to bother my AA gunners much. Definately not realistic but fun as all hell
