The stripped Shirt has to be intentional, and i think its a great touch. ALthough i think they should have tied that to silent running, cause ive only seen it when your boat is hit and flooding.
From books ive read in the past, it got REALLY HOT in a fleet boat in the pacific. Temperatures reaching to like 120 degree's in the pressure hull during silent running because all the fans and AC had to be shut off. If i remember right, crew would ingest salt tablets to restore some of the lost salt from sweating, and the floor of the sub would just be covered in sweat. If that hot, you'd take your shirt off too. hell, i'd be down to my skivvies. |

Yes, it got hot in the S and Central Pacific. I remember one of the logs mentioning the AC was working good when it was only 85F in the sub. I've seen lotsa movies and WWII sub film clips with shirts off. This was common. Only guys on subs in those days. While in battle you can't have guys passing out from heat if it can be helped.

In the book "War in the Boats" the author writes frequently about the incredibly hot conditions in the sub in general. Temps of over 100 degrees seem to not be uncommon...

And in S-Boats they didn't have air conditioning. They called them pigboats for a reason.

Well I think the real question is not if it is feasable to have a shirtless crew, but rather why this happens only when deep into a death dive.
