If the devs have modeled the sim on historic data , the japanese used to set the DC's at 100ft. It wasn't until later in the war that a US Congressman let it slip that the japanese navy were not have much success in hitting US subs as there DC's were set to low. Japanese thought that the US subs could not dive lower than 150ft, I will look out the piece again, but I am sure they didn't change there DC depth until 1943.

Yes, I have had some very stupid escorts and some very good escorts. Currently I find no fault. I have read some books on submarines in WW2. Quite often DD would drop one or two DC then speed off to the merchants. Some would give the US subs a work over. The DD do not seem that wimpy to me.

That would be really cool, actually. You have to take the same precautions regardless.

If so that would go a long ways towards explaining why some of them will hound you into hell itself and others just shrug off the fact that your sub just sank 100K tons worth of ships and go on about their business as if nothing happened.

I've seen both situations...

Well, think of it this way, escorts have 2 jobs. The first is to keep you from sinking their charges, the second is to kill the submarine. As long as escorts try even a little, you are put in a position of not being able to attack as effectively (or indeed at all sometimes).

Perhaps the lowest level AI is a bit too clueless, dunno.

This happens to me over & over in my mission. I raise my scope, all near ships will
start firing at it. I lower it and scoot away. All the DDs come to that
area and start blasting holes in the water but I am long gone. I go
somewhere else and do it again. Repeat, they all zip over and blast away.
I did this 6 times and got the same results every time. Never took any damage
and never heard any pings. DDs were all set to "Elite". Althought their
sighting ability was superb, eveything else (Hydrophones & Sonar) STUNK !!
I was always at PD & moving at Std. speed (making lots of noise) Other times
when I had scope down, 3 DDs passed almost right over me (thought collison)
but never knew I was there??? The only fix they get on me in this game is visual. If I don't give them
something to see, they just DC the heck out of the ocean where I was
last seen. I would be VERY HAPPY to hear some pinging going on...
BTW, they all seem to be using thier signal blinkers constantly. I wonder
if that is just random blinking or JUST MAYBE morse code??? That would be
a wonderful Easter Egg in the game !!

5th patrol, not a single ping yet. AI so stupid they go wrong way. I nailed the prop and rudder of a destoyer and instead of stopping he kept steamin off in wrong direction. the other's must have thought he was after me and went with him. They never came back. So I surfaced and sank all 6 ships...

I've also yet to have any DD's get close with their attacks in four patrols. I've been pinged once but the depth charge attacks were well away from my sub.

But crusty old Kaleun habits die hard and I treat every attack in SH4 just like I would in GWX as far as an evasion plan and procedures (2 knots, deep, silent running and no more than 10 degree rudder turns.)

I've been pinged like crazy by destroyers. Sunk by their depth charges, shelled by them, and even rammed. Sometimes they can't find you and other times they drill you.

If they start pinging what I do is crash dive and let off a decoy, then if still being pinged at 100 metres make a sharp turn, go to 1/3 and let off another decoy. Seems to work, they'll drop charges about 50 feet behind when I do that.

I know decoys aren't realistic but I'm only on 63 realism cause I'm new to all this.
