Start at the begining of the war in Kiel & choose the Type 2.

Kiel is an awesome place to start, probably the most active port & you have the Kiel Canal to try out.
THANKS!! Will I be able to upgrade my sub as normal if I start in the beginning?

I am kinda excited to know that you use the auto targeting and still hve the feeling of being in the actual sub.

Upgrades will come in time as usual.

However there are ways to ensure you get the upgrades when they are available.

I have told you start at the beginning because that's the happy times, you need to use this time to increase your crew experience and renown, do this before the end of 1942.

80% here, automatic targetting and external camera. Thinking to switch to manual targetting but it just takes so much practice and SH3 loads so slow...

I play at 52%, half n half. I have all thebasics, dud torps, limited fuel batteries compressed air oxygen. Realistic repair, sensors and reloads.

Im not an uber realism nut, to Kumando who says where is the fun in auto targeting, I say, there is lots of fun, it takes an enormous amount of pressure off you the player giving you more time to actually do what the whole point of the game is, sink ships. I didn't get into silent hunter just to twiddle dials on a HUD. I got into it because I wanted to be the captain, and I wanted to experience WW2 in an enjoyable situation.

If you think manual targeting is just twiddle dials you dont really have a clue of what you are talking about, you should try manual targeting first before you even say that auto target is fun.

94%

I use the weapons officer for ship identification only.

i can only assume that on a real U-boat a weapons officer would assist the captain in identifying ships and plotting solutions in the very least.

but i feel like his solutions are far too quickly plotted... i mean think about it, you have to go through a couple of minutes of target motion analysis before you can plot an accurate solution... because his solutions are instant - i dont use him. its far more rewarding to score hits using my own solutions anyhow.

perhaps if there were a mod which would cause the weapons officer to take 2 or 3 minutes to plot a solution? now that would be nice

Indeed, but instant solutions no thanks.

Thanks all, I think I am going to set everything to real except the manual targeting..

I am a little nervous to play WITHOUT the ext. cam as I always use it to watch my torps hit.

But in the same token I use it aswell to see where the destroyers are, which I guess is cheating..

I am going to try this GWX thing out with the settings I mentioned..

I hope I still love it as much as I did with the ext. cam on.

I have tried using manual targeting, too bothersome, too complicated and fiddly for me. How did you come to the conclusion I hadn't tried it? When in my message I specifically posted that using auto targeting takes an enormous amount of pressure off the player, and gives them more chance of sinking a ship?

thats true- one of the nice things about SH3 is how scalable it is.

when one claims to want "realism" they SHOULD play with manual targeting... otherwiseits too arcade like and you might as well play this game with a game pad or something hahaha

one has to consider that in real life a u boat crew had to at least ...

1. raise the periscope
2. ID the target(s)
3. get bearing and range information
4. plot this information on a chart relative to the u-boat
5. start time
6. lower the scope
7. at about 1 minute 20 seconds the capt would raise the scope again
8. gather new bearing and range data
9. plot the second point on the chart
10. stop the clock at 2 minutes
11. estimate speed and target course based on the above plotted information
12. take last minute range, bearing, AOB calculations
13. input the information to the torpedo data computer
14. flood the tubes to be fired, open the tube doors
15. fire the shot(s)

this all had to be completed for every ship the crew intended to shoot at... historically it could be a time consuming process - it is possible with the right tools to plot solutions to multiple targets at the same time so that when you fire the first shots you just input the TDC data for the next shot in and then take the second shot and then repeat for the third target and so on.

it was not uncommon for a skipper to find a convoy of 30+ ships and only be able to attack 2 or 3 of them. having to evade excorts, then stalk the convoy from over the horizon, and line up an attack the next night... this could go on for several days!

and you can do it this way in the game, but not all players are alike. some guys just want to point and click and suddenly "HEY MAN LOOK AT ME IM A U BOAT ACE I HAVE 2.5 MILLION TONS AND ITS ONLY MY THIRD PATROL!!" thats what is nice about SH3.

personally i like the realism on high, the pressure is on YOU to make the shot go correctly. Its up to YOU to gather the data properly. and if you miss you have no "bernards" but yourself to hold accountable for it.

BUT

when you score a hit after several minutes of plotting a solution you will probably feel like jumping for joy

props to you guys for playing with the manual targeting and the 100% realism. Just not my cup of tea. I play SH3 to unwind after a long day so I just like to sit back. I will have to try it one day with the realism higher then 23%. :p props to you guys again though. please don't look down on your noob fellow captain here. hehe

we would never look down on a fellow capt.

its just the rare guy that comes on bragging about his single patrol where he racked up 100,000 tons except it was on totally arcade settings.

thats like getting breast implants and then bragging about how big your boobs are.
