That's a good question. We can make several text edits to alter values like StormConditions and deck gun ammo. But perhaps the sound recognition we can hear, is a different ball game to what the SO can hear/understand/translate.

I still like the onion idea

what exactly do you want to change? remember, the hydrophone works for you at 34 km max. The SO can hear the ships closer then 20km. if you wish to reduce your hydrophone detection area, then just tweak the amb_Hydrophone.wav (in SH3/data/sound). open it in some sound recorder and raise the volume to make the ambiance sound much louder. the ambiance sound should be loud enough to mask the propeller sounds if the contact is farther then 20 km. I suppose you will need to do some tests in order to find such a level. then you should be able to hear exactly what your SO hears, and no more.

And anyway if these guys were too good, we would miss the pleasure of sticking our own ears at the station. I just love it when after a few boring days of empty ocean I am the first to pick up the far away sound of a merchant prop...

Yeah, I'm usually the first to hear it to.
I found out - at least in GWX - that the only way to get him to listen closely, is to ask for a warship contact report...the regular "follow nearest warship contact" doesn't pick it up. And even then, it takes him a looooong time, before he finally can report it on request (I'm talking minutes).

I'm not quite sure that's realistic, though.
He's a qualified sonar-guy, with young ears lol...he should beat me, in reality imo.
And then I would put him off duty, if I wanted to listen myself.
Hopefully he gets better...we're on 4th patrol now.
His current record: Stabsbootsmann, 167/200exp, U-boot Kriegsabzeichen
