I remember a friend of mine years ago told me of why he was discharged from the service..he told me was was aboard and aircraft carrier, dont remember which, and he said he saw a crewmen pass behind a jet and it fired it's thrusters and the man melted....he said they hosed him off the deck with a hose into the sea...which I can understand as I would'nt think there would be much left...this incident haunted him I guess so the gave him a medical discharge....never forget him telling me that story.

funny stuff huh?

Are you sure it was fired? I don't see an ignited motor, even the low smoke propellants should be clearly visible if they're that close. It may just be a release of the weapon without igniting, for example during the landing shock, and then the missile simply slides forward. The little bit of smoke might be due to the wings scraping over the deck.

That's exactly what happened. If the Sidewinder had ignited, there wouldn't have been time to tahe that second picture...

Even though the guy in the first picture is obstructing our view of the motor itself, we should still be able to see some flame if the missile was really ignited. Consider these photos of burning AIM-9s:

By the way, as we are discussing interesting accidents, what's your opinion about this one?
