I know I have to wait if I want that Carrier.
When the Carrier is at 2900m from me, with a good solution, I fire of all four tubes. One at a time.

Three out of the four torp. hit their target. Lucky at that range.

Sorry. At first I answered your post, but in a few minutes I realized that what I wrote was just a piece of useless crap and I wanted to delete my post, but it was too late, unfortunately - some new posts followed. Than I edited my post, removed the crap and apologised for being so stupid. Translation follows:

Wow! What to say....I did this strike aganst an enemy convoy which had only 1 escort (which for some reason or another, was burning). I sank the escort, and then went on for the other ships.....

12 ships from the same convoy!

That was pretty cool....only 4 ships survived to tell the tale, and that's only because I was out of ammo (and no I didn't think of ramming any of them, just before someone says I should have done that).

or the time when I sank the H.M.S Rodney and the H.M.S King George V.........

Stalking a convoy from inside in a raging storm, and trying to distinguish enemy from neutral ships with almost zero visibility.

After that, spending an entire short patrol in a type II off the coast of Norway, feeling like I was playing traffic cop for the Norwegians (all neutral)

And sailing into Wilhelmshaven, seeing strange flashing lights and smoke in the distance, and getting closer to realize there had been an air raid and I'd barely missed it.

Oh, you said only one. Too bad; I ain't apologizin'.

My finest hour starts at 5pm and with a bottle of scotch. The bravest thing I every did in SH3 was pass up my finest hour and sailed port sober. It's hell out there and to do it sober is just insane

Finest hour... It was still in stock SH3 not enhanced by any mods AFAIR. Type VIIB, shallow waters close to English coast, Northern See. I was shadowing a merchant for a very long time, she drove me mad changing her course like every ten minutes, so I was plotting it every time anew. I wasn't spotted. Finally a chance appeared to shoot and I fired 1 torpedo. Hit! But that seemed to be not enough... She didn't sink. The agony lasted for ever. I surfaced to check if the weather is good to use my deck gun. It wasn't good at all. Rain and fog. So I submerged again and started moving to take shot position. I painted a "Misericordia" name on the torpedo and was almost ready to launch it.

That lasted for a looooong time. Now the time starts to be counted in pieces of seconds:
I hear a very loud noise.
My SO shouts: "Contact! Warship! Bearing 161! Very fast! Closing!"
I turn my periscope to bearing 161.
I see destroyer's bow like 100 metres before me.
I freeze.
I get rammed.
I get DC-d.
I get killed.

It was almost a heart attack. I spent several minutes sitting with my headphones on and staring at the green screen of death. I couldn't believe that.

That was the very first time I got killed in SH3. It was simply smashing...

Default finst hour

was last night.

While playing GWX for the first time I intercepted a CVBG off coast of Ireland. Destroyers found me almost instantly. Fired a spread at the main group HIt the carrier, slowed to 12 KM but didn't go down. Sank 3 destroyers with torps, and having only external torps left and wanting my first carrier real bad, I snuck away to 3k meters surfaced and sent the destroyer to the depths with 105, poor weather set in and I never found that wounded carrier, but i thought gunning down a destroyer in a sub was definately the coup de gras.

On my first mission to the Caribbean less than half across I ran into a convoy, I wouldn’t say a large one but from what I’ve seen it has 7 large Liberty Ships and one troop transport. I’ve been struggling to get around it so I could get in front but the convoy keep sending out one DD at a time to search for me (GWX 1943) At the beginning it was early morning with some heavy fog, for the first DD I went to periscope depth and reduced to 2knots, the DD came at me but was zig-zagging, when he got close enough I sunk him. With the time I lost I went to the surface to see if I could catch up and get in front, another DD was sent to search for me, again he came zig-zagging towards me, I fired but this one missed, he must not have known I was there (the weather was starting to get rough) he went right by me and into my rear sight of my torpedo. He started to burn, as I turned my scope around there was another DD off my port side that was now coming straight at me, I quickly shot three torpedoes, only one hit but I knew I was lucky because one was enough. Two more times I surface to catch up and each time a lone DD was sent back in a zig-zagging coarse, after the last DD went down I surfaced again to pick up the chase, this time the convoy came into sight, I was closer than I thought, but they were still too far out. Strange thing too they were all at 5knots but going in all kinds of different directions. I couldn’t see or hear any warships. I went full speed towards the convoy, I had almost three torpedoes loaded, the closer I got I could see that the convoy was starting to get back into an organized convoy and still no warship. At a distance of 4500 their speed started to pick up to 14knots, that’s when the end Liberty ship opened up his guns on me. I panicked and sent off my three torpedoes at that Liberty ship, I had lead it too much and as the third torpedo missed the bow of the cargo ship, it hit the troop ship, but it didn’t go down. Now I’m flowing this convoy, and maybe now in the dark I can get in close enough or around it, but I only have two torpedoes left, in the rear, one up front.
(I hope another DD doesn’t spawn?)
I was proud of taking down the DD’s it was harder than the way this reads. And oh yeah I’m still far enough out at sea so when a plane shows up they can’t stay too long.

Well I havent been playing for long, but I had a moment that I will probably remember for a long time. Came across a convoy, very early war, actually first or second patrol I think. Anyway the weather was just awful, havent seen a storm like it since. I would be 300 meters from ships before I would see them, and I was not seen by anyone. I tried to remain submerged but I decided to get greedy and it paid off. I surfaced and went to flank speed and just zig zagged all over the place hitting ship after that ship. There were two DD escorts but they were useless, it was middle of the night and the way the weather was they lost track of me every 5 seconds, even surfaced and right beside them. They fired at me a lot but most of the shots werent even close. Cant remember right now how many ships I ended up sinking but with the weather the way it was I was getting one hit kills on almost all of them. Lots of fun. I used to hate the bad weather but after that I've changed my mind.

I should answer my own thread. My finest hour was when I was patroling outside Gibralter (pre-GWX) and a TF got past me in the medium fog. Throwing caution to the wind I shot my stern torp (an electric) trying to take down a battle ship. The angle was extremely oblique so I went for a under the keel shot with magnetic arming. Got the sucker, too. Must have hit an ammo room or something because she went up in a fireball. I'd never seen that before, one torp one battleship. First and only battleship for me, too...ever.

The most heart-stopping moment for me was when I sighted my first convoy. My heart was hammering....awesome.

What was your finest hour?

It can be as simple as learning how to shoot the flak guns or sinking a ship at 100% realism or trying to look up the skirts of the nurses.

Let's here it, guys. What was your finest hour as a kaluen in SH3?
I had been testing my Type IX-XI Uberboot and was using Zaunkonig 1's
what happened was that I fired three acoustic torps downrange at formation
of four River Class Frigates, (new type 2 download here,http://hosted.filefront.com/MushMartin ) and what happened was
that all three acoustics homed on one ship as the escorts where closing me
when the first torp hit the escort it killed the engines and by then the remaing two acoustics were headed back downrange towards me, now if
you have played against a type 2 River Class Frigate you would know that
hanging out to spend time with them is just not a good choice so I had been moving at speed, the two now returning acoustics would have me if I was moving fast enough to get clear of the escorts and the escorts would have me if I stopped and let the acoustics go by me at all stop silent running, with no torps left and reload not happening in the same hour,
I did the only thing a resourceful skipper could.

I went quick quiet all stop and let the two acoustics go by me, while they were behind me and still close enough to hear me, I hit Flank ahead and turned course back up range towards the oncoming Frigates (3) as the acoustics picked up My sound signature at flank within two hundred yds
they came about and started tracking to intercept my course, at which point, I went quick quiet all stop again and they slid by me back uprange
towards the now much closer frigates, both torps engaged seperate ships this time and as first one was about to open the hedgehog attack portion of my day I took him in the screws popped his seals and he sank in mere seconds. the second torp totally crippled its ship, leaving me only one to deal with a hard knuckle with a Bold decoy in it, and I was away while the
last escort pounded the seafloor with repeated attacks. got away clean
in a failed and recovered attack, I have been playing subsims for more than
a decade and this was just totally frosty classic skippering it was very very
gratifying.

A very close second went to the first time I got sunk by a type 2 River Class Frigate that BBW and I got together and made
I was absolutely thrilled at how good the escort ships were, and like a papa I was very proud of the creation it was a far better
asw escort than the Vanilla type 3 river de had ever been and they were sailing smart and quick, being a creator in this case
was the thrill even though getting my heinie kicked by them left me staring at the screen for a few minutes going Wow
who were those guys.

The most memorable moment for me was back when I was using GW1.1a and I was attacking this convoy. I was right in the middle of them, trying to keep track of all the ships, especially the warships of course. I was at periscope depth and had forgot to check my rear for a bit. I was trying to get into position to fire my forward eels at a target and had neglected to check my rear for a while. I fired off my shots and then swung my periscope around 180° to see that a DD was less than 500m away coming straight at me at high speed. Luckily, she was directly behind me. I hit crash dive and fired my rear torp, just hoping to get the warship to change course for a bit and whammo, about 15 seconds later, the DD went down in flames.

I thought that was pretty exciting.
