Keeping your TC to 256 or lower will get you more contacts and will usually give you greater distance to respond when getting those contacts.

there was real-world saying in kriegsmarine as ive read in some book about using torpedos that was something like:

Electric (powered torp) at day, steam (powered torp) at night and go get some
