Is AI programmed to have a bad detection-rate when weather is bad?

I used to think calm so that I could use my deck gun but after a rather nasty encounter with an armed merchant in mid-1942 (using GWX the bugger almost sank me!), I've changed my mind on that.

No I like clear, stormy weather. Makes evasion a WHOLE lot easier.

Of course.
Otherwise we wouldn't be playing this sim anymore, I think.

During my running patrol, I did a raid on ScapaFlow (a good one, and escaped!), during the night with a dry (no rain) thunderstorm overhead.
Sea was calm, wind 7m/s.
Not my ideal weather (I like dark, foggy nights), but the thunderstorm made it very creepy!
On my escape towards the Shetlands, I came accross a large convoy coming through the islands and the mainland, and changing course SSE....still with that thunderstorm overhead.
I attacked a Pyro-ammunition ship, which completely exploded.
Imagine the atmosphere there: roaring thunders, then suddenly the last ship in a row goes down that way within minutes! They had no idea where to look.
A lovely sight...seeing the convoy disappear again, lit by lightning everytime.

Which brings this question: I was undetectable, but I still would love the risk of being exposed a little everytime the lightning lights up my Uboat for a split second.
And I guess that can't be modelled?

Not particularly fussy as long as I can use it to my advantage

Nasty seas with super foggy weather is no help. They might not detect you but you'll have a hard time finding them too. And if you do find them, they'll probably be to close.

Pah, I know exactly what my favourite conditions are.

7 m/s Wind - That way escorts are not too deadly or too dumb (sensors)
Light Fog - Same reason, I can see them before they see me.
Dusk/Dawn - Again visability reasons.

Of course this will change as the war progresses. The main aspect in later war will be the sea state as I notice that in 10 m/s + my conning tower will/does breach the surface, even if I set a lower depth i.e. 13-14m.

Note - I've never thought about visablity during rain.:hmm: Does it affect the visabilty range of escorts.

In the early years I don't really care too much about the weather. No matter waht you always manage to sink them one way or another. Later in the war things do get a bit..........difficult. The most uncomplicated type of attacks for me are in totally calm conditions, at night from the surface at lone merchants. You can ambush them and sink them before they realised what hit them.

is the difficulty in spotting you when you are opposite the sunrise/sunset modelled?

If it is, then "wow".
I dunno I just like watching the explosions against the sun

Night in medium fog, it means you can be in the middle of the convoy and the escorts can't see you!

I like a little wind, medium waves no fog. I now always set my torpedoes to impact.
