Well here is the patrol report of the second War patrol of U-49.
We were waved off at the pier by the Flotilla Commander and other high rankers.
When we had only just left the pier i noticed that the Blucher had layed anchor during the night in port.

We had unaventfull passage through the Kiel canal and and returned the hellos and waves of the people of Brunstbuttle as we clear the canal in to open water.

Not long after breaking out into open water we spotted some locals out on a pleasure cruise. My number one jokingly said we should give the deck gun crew something to shoot. But we both knew the deck gun crew would have there fun in time.

After clear the channel that leads to the Canal we put the enigines to ahead one third and went through the normal drills to keep the men fresh and on the ball.
Five days after leaving kiel we were just North West of Lerwick and it was late evening and we were conducting are hourly hyderphone check when i got the call that we had a sound contact moving in we altered course to what should give us our best chance of shot should i be an enemy ship. Just after 02.00am we up the scope and there just under 1000m of our bow was a large british merchant. A nice juicey target to get the patrol off to a great start.
At a range of 900m we let lose with 2 torps everyone had there fingers crossed that the attck would be sucessful.
Then right on time expolsion followed by another YESS to hits right amidships the ship stops dead in the water. She starts to sink by the bow then is slips under the waves and is gone.

After the sinking of the large Merchant we continued on our course to our patrol grid of AM 76, For the next 5 days we did not see another ship or even pick up any contacts on the hyderphone. But we did play crash dive games with the enemy planes that seem to be hunting for us after the sinking of there ship.

The days of no contact changed on the 9th of Nov when we were on are hyderphone check we picked up a faint contact at a constaint distance. We surfaced at once and ran off on a interseption course after 2 hours at high speed the look outs spotted smoke on the hirszon. We closed into a range of 2000m and open fire on a british small merchant, The deck gun crew went to work and in the early morining they sunk the second ship of the patrol with just over 20 shells.

After the sinking it was back on our original couse to our patrol grid we had been on course for three days after are last sinking without sighting so much a fish ,

When we pick up yet another sound contact we surfaced and set off on a course to find the contact it turned out to be yet another British small Merchant, we closed the gap to her to around 1200m then opened up with the deck gun in worsening weather. After and 30min action the deck gun crew had her heading to the bottom this was turning into a good patrol.

After the sinking it was off to our selcted patrol grid we patroled there for the ordered 24 hours then i desided that we would turn back north to the hunting grounds northwest of Ireland. We had only been in that area when we ran into a outward bound pryo ammo ship. We closed the gap to her and opened up with the deck gun. After only a few hits she was a blaze but the weather was getting to bad to aim well enough so i desided to finsh her off with a torpedo the fish malfuctioned so we fired another and it hit with a big bang amidships.
The next morining we spotted a small merchant trying to make her way to England.
She was sent to the bottom with the trusty deck gun crew the victors yet again, though we only have 60 rounds left for the beast now.

Stay tuned for part two

Very early on the morining of the 17th the watch crew spots smoke in the distance we plot a course and run off to investige we find it to be another pryo ship trying run the blockade we close to with in 600m and fire a torpedo it hits in the bow section ship seems to slow and starts to list instead of using another torpedo to finish her off i call up the deck gun crew to do the honours she goes up with a bang after about 10 shells.

Later that same day we came across two more ships the first one a Tramp steamer which was sent to the bottom with the last remaining shells from the deck gun and one torpedo.

The Passenger cargo went down with a bit of trouble i thought just the one torpedo would send her to her grave but we needed to put another torp into her as we had no more shells for the deck gun left. But it was yet another sinking on what was turning into amazing patrol.

On the very next day we ran into the targets that would use up are remaining torpedos. The first one was a small merchant which was picked up on are hourly hyderphone check. We closed the target submerged and moved into fireing postion, we fired off our first torp at a range of 450m it hit amidships and stop dead and started to sink on a even keel. But after and 2 hours it would not sink any further and it was desided to put a finishing shot into her. Which smacked into her in the bow and down she went.

The next ship to fall prey to us that day was a Tramp steamer, we picked her up on are hyderphones almost as soon as the merchant before her was sliping beneath the waves she was coming towards us so we lay in wait and when sighted we moved in to fireing postion. We let her close to just under 1000m then let her have two of the best. Both hit in the stern of the ship and down she went.
The last of our targets was another small merchant, She was spotted my the lookouts as we raced from the scene of our last sinking.
We droped to PD deth and let her close on us and moved into firing postion we fired one torpedo which hit amidships. She sank down a bit but was not going to go under so our last eel was used to put her under, For fun we desided to surface to fire are last eel. It hit with a bang and down she went.

Then it was rime to set a course for home back to family and friends oh and lots of beer and women for the crew

We had a very quite ride back to base we tryed to stay as far away from the UK as possible. It seemed to work as we spotted no planes are ships and we arrived off the mouth of the Kiel canal on the early evening of the 27th. We made good speed back up the canal and Kiel came into sight in the Morining of the 28th.

As we pulled in along side the pier i noticed a car pull up oh my god it was Onkal Karl!!! He steped aboard and addressed the crew and was very happy with us and wished us luck for are next patrol.

It was one week before Christmas and we were ready to sail on our third war patrol.
We had the very nice words of onkal Karl ringing in are ears from the send off party the night before. Though we were going to miss Christmas at home we were itching to get the the enemy. Let losse are torpedos and get back home safe and sound.
We sliped from the pier and set course of the canal. With the harbour patrol planes buzzing over head.

As we aproched the first bridge we notice the were people wave us on are way so we replied in kind it was nice to know that we were doing a duty that made many proud.

As soon as we hit the open sea after are safe transit through the canal. The weather turn very sour indeed a overcast sky rolled in and the wind picked up and after a day or so the the rain started to fall. It seemed we had started are run to are patrol grid in a nasty winter storm.

We arrived on station at are patrol grid AM51 on Christmas day itself the weather was still very bad indeed. We try to stay submerged as much as possible as vissablity was down to under 300m for days. We patrol the grid without picking up a single contact which was very disshearting as we had great success in around the same area on are last patrol. We desided after a week of patrolling the grid to move on to the hunting grounds of the grid next door. We had been patrolling in grid AM52 for a few day when we picked up a contact on the hyderphone. We closed the target submerged as the contact was closing and the weather up top was hideous. We closed to within 500m and we could not see the target but as we closed further a small British merchant poped out of the heavy fog . We fired off to torps but one was dud but the other hit with a nice bang amidships. The weather was so bad that the one torpedo was enough to see her sink beaneath the waves. Yes at last we were off the mark on this cruise.

After the sinking we headed off back on are patrol course it was only 10 or so minutes latter when we heard a warship coming in fast. It did not alter course to are postion. It was very unluck as if it was a clear day we would have had a very good shooting postion on this bad boy.

Later that day we pick up several more contacts on the hyderphone. We were able to find three of the contacts and get into firing postion even though the weather was so bad. What was even more amazing was that we managed to send all three to the bottom. Even though we had yet another dud torpedo.

3 days after sinking those 4 small merchants in the one day the weather final started to break and we could at last do some patroling on the surface without the risk of getting lost overboard. We were ploughing along nicely when the lookout shouted that he had spotted smoke so we put the enigines full ahead and of we went to investigate.
It turned out to be a tramp steamer as the weather had got better I called for the gun to be mad ready and the deck gun crew to do there worst to the steamer.
It was not long before the steamer was sinking to the bottom. We were soon back on course. This was turning into a good patrol even though the weather had not been too good up to know.

It only took another day for us to run into are next victim which was yet another steamer. Again it was time to call apon the deck gun crew it did not take them long to brake the back of the steamer.

Then on the 10th of Jan the weather took a turn back towards the bad again as a major storm rolled in. It was not all bad as we picked up another contact on the hyderphones, we close on the contact and it turned out to be a big ammo ship bound for the UK. We moved into a good firing postion and waited for the big ship to come into view we fired 2 torpedos at her one hit the other was a dud. As fast as we could we set up for another shot this time it went staright and normal and hit her right in the bow and up she went with a massive expolsion that could be felt through out the boat.
Later on that night we came across and other contact and moved into fire only that when the ship cam into view we saw it was a neutral!!!! What a waste of time.

For the next 12 days not a thing was possible to bring the war to the enemy on are patch of sea as the mother of all storms pounded the living hell out all that lived on the sea. We spent most of are time submerged only coming up to vent the boat and charge batts
On the early morning of the 22nd the weather final got better and as no surpise as the weather got better so did are luck we picked up smoke on the horizon and off we went to see what was the course of the smoke it turned out to be a large merchant as we had no torpedos left it was left to the trusty gun crew to dispatch the big vessel to the bottom it took them a while but they got the job done.
Late on the same day we came across another ship this time a small merchant yet again it was the deck gun crew that done the job, they were earning there pay yet again.

For the next five days the was only one day when we did not come across a ship that we did not sink we could not belive the were so many targets that emeny were not protecting if only we had more boats.

Then after informing BDU of are unbelievable haul it was time to set course for home and it was not before time everyone was champing at the bit to get back home and tell everyone there stories of war in the atlantic.

Just over a week after sinking are last ship we were slipping in the harbour at Kiel. We noticed that the hipper had join the blucher since we had been away somethimg big was going to happen we all thought. It was lat at night when we got back so it was not till the following morning that I was told that I had recived the iron cross second class.
