When attacking a convoy I submerge in front of the convoy and fire a fan shot from 2-3000m and 70-80 degrees angle. There`s always a chance I will hit something, especially with the pattern running torpedoes. After launching my eels I dive to 200m hoping for the best.

If I survive post 43 I tend to fire my eels from much longer distances because the escorts are far more experienced (in the main) and dive deep straight after instead of early years luxuries ie: watching them impact through the periscope.
Better to live and be able to intercept again the next day or so rather than go in all guns blazing and inevitably kissing your ar*e goodbye!! ![]() |

I just finished a 1943 start career. This is the second one in over 18 months of constant play and since this one is the super modded with much more difficult sensors and 12-20 veteran escorts per convoy it is more like the first real one. I certainly almost did not survive on many occasion and felt more like a slithering Jackal than a prowling wolf.
When one is silent at one knot and in proper position of a convoy’s path it is very nerve racking to see a line of seven escorts crisscrossing in front of the convoy. If I pick the hole I can slip in and that amounts to a one in three lucky chance. Still with being careful and playing it like the men were real and my actions had consequences I sank almost a half a million tons including an escort carrier and a cruiser. I have added patrols right outside of ports from mid 44 on and it took long periods of no TC just to leave and enter port. I started playing every other day for the first time since May of 2005 because the strain was getting to me and causing me to be careless. When I would attack a convoy I got in to I would turn and run with the merchants as I dove to 200 meters then would turn to a flank all at one knot. Once I heard the “Wasser Bomben” I would crank up the electrics and turn 45% to have them blow up just behind me. This certainly saved me more than any one maneuver. I use to start in 39 but barely get into 43 and be sunk so started doing these 43 careers to learn the ropes and just found the on the edge difficulty more challenging than running up a high unrealistic score in a cavalier way that always ended in a dumb mistake because I was not careful. In 1943-45 one is careful virtually every minute. I did not p[lay brave but ran and hid at the first sign of danger but also took pains to make they English escorts pay a high price for coming after me. I often sank few merchants and many escorts simply because I knew if I blasted a few when they caught me before I could get to the merchants there would be less to hound me as I tried to escape. Now that I have finally got this extremely hard yet possible I will go back and do a whole war one hopefully not finding the happy days so boring. Or, GWX will come out and I will get to start over on rebuilding the sensors and campaigns for that to my liking because they would not do it hard enough. There are just not enough masochists like me to assume they would do so. Wulfmann

If only you could read the threads in the GWX beta forum.
GWX Survivability Surviving an ASW Attack There is alot of talk over there about how much harder the AI Escorts are and in one thread someone asked "do you think that GWX is too hard now?". It was decided no once we got some tips from the gurus. Cdre. Gibbs and Ducimus have enlightened us as to how to better survive. In fact we even got a little chart from Ducimus. ![]() Ill ask if we can show off the content of that thread here. Don't think it betrays too much of GWX. |

Stay down and quiet, keep well clear off any warship contacts, fire from long range and dive and turn away immediately.
Do not use the snorkel if the waves is drowning it, your engine crew will get tired off the running between electric and diesel engine rooms. And your conning tower will be visible between the waves if the sea is too rough, your better off on the surface in that case. Turn your radar off, use only the radar receiver, but remember, Avengers from the escort carriers do not use radar. Follow your orders, but do not try to be a hero ![]()

lol.....remember it was you who wrote those words ![]() Believe me. it would be great if GWX was done to satisfy my intensity. But, I believe the masses would not be happy with what that level would be. Also, I am able to tweak it to that extreme and that is always part of the fun, getting that extra inch of realism (as I see it). I am sure GWX will be at a much higher level than TGW (but, no offense that was soooo easy it wasn't funny) and as we have wound down some with more Kaleuns wanting a tougher fight I would bet 95% will find GWX spot on. I would be curious if they will be going to realistic numbers of escorts for later wa but even if they don't I can mod that easy enough Besides I would guess they could care less what I think anyway:rotfl: Wulfmann

The late war tactics not fit well with VII and XI boats,
the submerged speed is too low, with batteries or snorkel, also the water condensation inside of an unprepared boat to stay very long time dived cause problems. the submarine becomes a mine waiting for a target. i think is better stay submerged with snorkel than stay surfaced, dive and hide the snorkel is only a few seconds. not the 25-40 s in surface. Be water my friend !!

Later war --- get U-flak + TV
Little convoy attacking --- hard to do well without sustaining damage U-flak --- wipes out many planes (up to 23 in a patrol - my best record) TV --- scare away DDs. I don't agree docking at base immediately after loading --- although you can get through the war, it is impractical and unrealistic. I'm very down-to-earth. |
