If anyone needs help or tutorial, them I have a little time to offer advice.
I am not the best of modelers and usually work high-polly, but I know the basics. Some WIP shots from a project I am working on:

this is my humble creation:
it's a really low quality Jpeg just to show how it looks. diferent colors are diferent meshes, should the hatch (pale pink) be modeled out of the actual turret(blue) or kept as a separate element?. the Hatch itself (green-ish) should remain separate, so it can be opened or closed as i see fit.

well yes, but the hatch isn't finished yet
the question that troubles me is... should i try to create a circle on the upper part of the turret and then use it to make the hatch or leave it as a separate object?

I would've extruded it from the turret, but I don't think it matters much

Are you using 3ds MAX?
I would leave it as a seperate object. Punching round objects into flat surfaces requires either using a boolean which you have to be careful with as they can really screw things up, or you make a box with lots of sections and manually make the circle and extrude it out. If it is an external model keep it as it is. KISS applies to modelling, Keep It Simple Stupid. www.military-meshes.com has a great forum and lots of help.
