I think we've all done that, and the classic not asking the nav to follow your patrol line - straight in to the harbour wall!

That's one I'll never be guilty of. I always leave the pier at 1 knot, stick to the 5-knot speed limit within harbor confines, and navigate by eyeball until I'm in the open.

I had a pretty short career before too! I forgot that I'd tapped the rudder after coming out of Kiel Canal so thought I was still on the waypoints and jumped to 128x TC to get out into the ocean. Nope. Ended up ramming into the far shore. Poor little IID.

Your welcome....don't forget to save it at the end in jpeg format to keep the file size low.

So I was tracking a merchant contact I had and was in the sprint on the surface phase of it when the fog cleared a bit and my watch crew calls out a contact close! 7000m off my starboard side is a seven destroyer hunter killer group!? Yikes! Double yikes because I'm at 48% hull and not sure how low I can go.

So I drop to 50m and silent running, turning away from where I'm hearing the warships. They keep tracking off to the side, sounds like everything is perfect! So I pop up to periscope and take a peek. Sure enough the group is heading away, but what my sonar guy didn't tell me is one of the destroyers is heading right at me!

I drop down to 70m (pushing it!) and turn kinds towards him hoping to mask my props. He spins around a bit, but then finally heads back to his pack.

After popping up to periscope again I take a look and sure enough he's on his way home. So at this point I decide to external camera it and watch him rejoin. Imagine my surprise when while following him to his group I notice there's way more than seven ships there... two HK groups in the same spot! This new group is heading right towards me!

I just stop and wait. They came pretty close, medium range according to the hydrophone, but passed just by me. Phew!

From an earlier patrol... This poor fisherman wandered too close to Wilhelmshaven and a local flyboy was kind enough to demonstrate why doing so was a poor choice from that captain.

Ctrl-F11 takes a BMP screenshot which is stored in the main SH5 install folder as well.
