Did they ever fix the sH4 damage control and damage model? I remember that damage was joke with SH4 (ie you couldnt fix things, once you DID get damaged it pretty much destroyed your sub and you sank to your death....)

This was a game breaker for me and the reason why I havent played SH4 since the patch before the last.

Yeah, the major mods aren't compatible with it yet, but I have faith that they will... and the "wait 'til they are" attitude won't help much. Someone's gotta ride that bleeding edge, right?
Im in Europe, and have european version of the game. Where can I but this addon? The link you refer to says something about only people from US being able to buy it. Is this for real?! I want this...

Is SH4 now playing as well as SH3?

I was a great fan of the original SH and then of SH3. I bought SH4, but after the hate mail started to show up at the bulk rate, never loaded it up.

I can't really get a grasp of two things from having read most of this thread.

Does SH4 after patching to 1.4 now play as well as SH3?

Does this add-on do anything to fix the bugs in the US sub game or does it only add the German campaign in the Indian Ocean?

If it does fix US bugs, do we now think it plays as well as SH3 thereafter?

Thanks for the help.

hum ok long story but bear with me it has a point.

memorable moments from SHIII

one day after setting sail i came across a short sunderland, ok he caught me on the surface, but i could probably dive...thing is my gunner due to circumstances was kept busy last mission, and the guy is a killer! So, i stayed on the surface. he nailed 11 last mission, one sunderland hasnt got a chance!

so 3 hours out of port sat on the bottom of the sea with the gunner dead and the entire front room utterly ruined i finally got the flooding under controll and headed home, after burying my AA gunner at sea.

memorable moment 2.

the south of england is not a good place to be in a sub, destoryer and hurricanes swarm the area like you wouldnt beleive,i power through this area as far south as possible, on the surface at high speed till im through, diving only if forced to by aircraft.
anyways, im sitting in the map room, having a look at my target zone. i know its early morning because i just came from the bridge.
after nosing about i come up with a course i think should get me there without too much trouble.
BANG!
wtf ? damage reports are off the scale, i cant keep up with them. everything is broken and were flooding like crazy apparantly. could it have been an aircraft ? why didnt the crew warn me, i go to the bridge....or i try to, several times..
ok, were submerged, that is why i cant get to the bridge.
weird. ok we are flooding and blowing ballast batrely slows the dive. i try to hit full reverse, however the engines die..i can only watch the depth indicator as we get deeper and eventually smah hard into the seabed.
now i have to manage my crew, as fast as possible, by the skin of my teeth, and with seconds only to spare i manage to controll flooding in the front crew room, and eventually we also get controll of the entirely flooded torpedo room. im leaking fules like mad, the dive planes are bust, the tubes are broken, as are several other vital parts of my VII.
im so engrossed in getting controll of my ship and at least delaying the inevitable i lose track of time. eventually, we get a battery working again, and with the flooding down as low as we can get it, i order flank speed and blow ballast.
now it wasnt exactly text book, we got up, but eventually.. this was no fast climb. and we were running nose down once on the surface.
i finally got the diesels working and set course for the nearest harbour.
then i got to the bridge, noticing a few things, it was pitch black, we had been down theyre all day, the deck gun was bust,as were the AA guns and the scopes.
we got as far as the mouth of the harbour when the last of the fuel dried up. made it by the skin of our teeth..

as for SHIV.. erm, well i dont recall anything of the sort. i got a flooded compartment once and the game ended...? just like that. no suspense, no suspsension of beleif, just "game over" everytime a compartment floods...no Das boot moments..

dont get me wrong i love shiv, but the damage model ( realistic?? or not i dont know) is certainly not ever going to give you a magick movie moment..

aircraft swarm like flies in all places, its not easy to beleive. they dont have a puspose like the hurricanes swarming north and south of the UK..theyre just "eveyrwhere"

and in SHIV i never encountered anything in a harbour that would make me ever enter a harbour again..

there are other moments from SHIII that give me pleasent memories. comming out of a south east base in the UK i ran into a carrier group. and nailed one, zero vis in the rain, i set them to run low, set a wide spread, and got lucky...if it hadnt been for the log i wouldnt have know what i sank, just that i sank "something"

on my way north to get away from the escorts i came across another carrier group. and scored my second ( very rare in that career to catch a task force let alone see a CV)
however this gus escorts were pissed at me. sat at 250 feet or so with a jammed rudder i could only move in circles from midnight till afternoon the next day when they finally left me alone long enough to surface and repair the rudder. even then, it was straight back down and run for open seas.

SHIV in the rare event the IJN escorts do anything ( ive had 3 hit my scope and sink one after the other..grrrr) any damage, would almost instantly be repaired, or cause your death, without ever having the "magik moments" of SHIII..

shiv does many things well, but just as many things seem "broken" now i odnt know whats more realistic, SHIII or SHIV, but, i wont ever forget that day sat at the bottom of the sea thanks to a mine of the coast.

and ive yet to get a decent moment worth remembering in SHIV.
for me the only thing that really hurts SHIV is the damage model.. the survive or die with nothing in between aspect is a shame.
i can live without finding stuff in harbours, i mean the sea isnt exactly emtpy in SHIV. and hiting a moving target is more rewarding, but i feel its something that should be worked on.

Cow, thanks for the response. I have been playing the SH4 mod Trigger Maru and so far am impressed. I haven't been damaged yet though so it may not have fixed that piece. Otherwise, it is extremely well done.

I can tell you one thing. With Trigger Maru you won't be complaining about escorts "if they do anything." Escorts are slightly unrealistically hostile and they will kill you.

My first experience with RSRD DD's with side throwers was enlightening. Sonar shows he'll pass safely to starboard, sir! "Recommend sitting tight on this pass", Ensign Dimwit said. Just before the loudest explosions any crew ever heard and lived. Now you don't know whether charges will drop off the stern or be thrown over the sides, widening the swath of death by a couple hundred yards.

Don't even THINK about tangling with aircraft running Trigger Maru. With the U-Boat and Operation Monsun the flying boats have rockets. You might as well blow kisses at 'em as shoot because they'll sink you either way.

I've played SH3 with and without GWX. SH4 is marvelous right now and has been since patch 1.3. And for those like me with long attention spans who don't just flit from trendy game to new trendy game, the good stuff has just begun!

These screen shots are awesome. Especially the sub with the light on the water.
