Just look into those facts:

* 12 patrols and over of 220 000 tonns sunk during the whole war.
* Scuttled in August,1944.
* After lying on the bottom for a whole year,the U-Boat is raised by French forces in 1945 and becomes a submarine of the French Navy.
*Another 14 years of service until 1959.
*Nobody knows where the U-Boat is now,as it was decomissioned in 1959.

Will anybody say that this U-Boat is not of the very special kind?

The main thing is that no sources have any information regarding the fate of this U-Boat after 1959.But,itself,that is something really outstanding when U-Boat fights successfully the most horrible war in history,gets scuttled,rises again as Phoenix out of arches,and serves for another 14 years.The most special U-Boat of BDU OKM,I think,even more special than all other legends - U-47,U-48,U-96.

Man,modern nuclear submarines sink in calm waters without any action...and here such endurance after being depth charged,bombed,and after all scuttled.I have no words,just no words. Iwould have said the atomic bomb.....it quite probably killed more people in less than a week (not 100% certain)....and ended the war more quickly....and most importantly, has prevented any further world wars since it's invention/creation. :hmm:

so the war in Iraq is just a little fight between a LARGE force of america and a SMALL one of "terrorists" ?.... not mentioning other wars...

it will become WW3 if it continue's...

My initial post refers to 'world wars' as in worldwide conflict ie: nations across the world mobilising their entire armed might and fighting across continents

Sail down under as there are less Allied planes to deal with and don't get cocky, weigh up the situation before you get your ass kicked in to next week.

Yes I agree, prevention is better than cure, but suppose you happen to get snagged by a hunter killer group or you attack a convoy and become made to pay for it? Some tips for the others would be helpful. I'm prepared to share mine, and I hope the other Type IX veterens would follow me.

Never came across HK's and I sail a lot down under as for convoys the most bad ass one's so to speak of sail from South Africa to Australia and back. I mainly target bottle neck areas yes I know a heck of a risk but it's worth it when you have a belly full of T-IV's & T-V's.

U-552 joining the club!

Early '42 at the moment, lurking in the shallows around Freetown as we speak.

Our last two patrols we made the Med a very dangerous place for the Limeys. Passing the Gib is doable until mid '42. Set depth at 180, silent mode, 2knots and go read a book. Sunk a Nelson, Revenge and several Fiji/Dido/Southhampton in several engagements near Alexandria. My little crew is making a retutation for themselves

When I get back in Lorient I hope the letter of permission from BdU to check out the Black Sea is on my desk :hmm: Since I have to pass the canal in Turkey, they had to get permission first.

Some experience to share with the club (why else have one?);

- Sailing decks-awash (7/8m depth) shaves of precious divingtime when you are in dangerous waters.

- Dont bother spending renown on radar. Radar-warning however is vital, especially late war. Rader-warning will pick up destroyers and aircraft a lot sooner than sonar will. You dont have to dive at once, first check the direction and speed of the contactlines. A lot of times, destroyers dont go for you if you are more than 15/20 km away. If the contactline changes distance fast, it a plane.


Anybody know good huntinggrounds when Drumbeat starts, or information on port defences? Curacao for instance had subnets, but is deeper than 70 meters. Wich means you can just go under it. Subnets only go to 50 meter (same goes for Pantelleria).
