There are some different tellings about the name of the locomotive seen on the photo, the most recent research however identify it unambiguously, by a lot of details and the time the photo was taken.

The locomotive that was hijacked in the Andrews raid, on the photo as a wreck in Atlanta, after Sherman had destroyed the city before his scorched-earth march to the sea.

edit:

The engine on the photo has been called the "Hero", "Fred Leach" and else, but historians have decided it indeed is the orginal "General" last year.

It was repaired and used for some more years, changed and changed again. The last iteration in the Kennesaw museum has quite a different look than the original outside-frame Rodgers product.

Jeeze! I looked up the two locomotives involved in driving the golden spike at Promontory Point Utah and also the General on museum display in Georgia; but couldn't tell anything like the photo details...

but it's been an honor to lead Jimbuna to the Promised Land...
