 This is U-96 departing St. Nazaire 27 October 1941 for it's seventh patrol, the famous Das Boot patrol. In the conning tower we see commander Lehmann-Willenbrock and Obersteuermann Alfred Radermacher (Kriechbaum in the book/movie). What makes it noteworthy is that U-96 does not carry the famous laughing swordfish emblem. All boats in the 7th flotilla were ordered in May 1941 to add the Scapa Flow snorting bull emblem to the conning tower in remembrance of Günther Prien. So during her 5th patrol U-96 carried both the snorting bull and the laughing swordfish. After the patrol the swordfish was removed completely and from then on she only carried the snorting bull. I did not know this until recently and it surprised me since the laughing swordfish emblem is so famous and features prominently in the movie. As a sidenote: Amazingly the L.I. Friedrich Grade (105) and the II.W.O Werner Herrmann (101) from that patrol are still alive today! Back to Jim.
