Having meticulously perused the voluminous taxonomy of this particular fungii, I find no mention of the name, Scottsman Robt. Fortune, you mentioned. The original discoverer was a 1700's Frenchman botanist, but his papers & sketches were seized then hidden in the empirical travails of the time; so the current name is after an Englisman's. Jimbuna or his son probably caught a whiff of this parasite's distinctive scent in their own voyages, but probably mistook it for bad cooking.

Right 'hood; but yours is a flower plant; the puzzle is a bad smelling fungus...with no roots...found on at least two VERY large Islands...when it can be found.
