Tater, have you checked out the sneak peek of iambecomelife's merchant fleet mod over on the SH3 mod forum? Some very cool ship models on there.

Yeah, I have been watching with interest. The only issue with sh3 ships is the textures are 512x512, and they look kinda flat in sh4. Also, porting them over is more complicated than just a quick conversion (we've seen some already) since it doesn't mess with the damage models, etc.

Maybe even real locations of these ships could be used and the dates of real Tokyo Express runs used to script them in.

Yeah I no what you mean I have the SH3 hospital ship ported over to my game and though it looks pretty good, but as you say, it looks a bit flat.

Is it not possible to re-skin SH3 ship models with a SH4 grade skin?

I think so, but having tried a little skinning... it's HARD.

That wreck is great!

What I had in mind was if iambecomelife agreed, perhaps some of his models could be reskinned and ported over to Sh4.

That would be cool... he's got some great stuff...

It's all in the texturing really. But for one thing... SH4 uses another set of "maps" to provide the "depth" that you see... Making all the textures for SH4 vessels isn't all that hard... I've already made them using Open Source tools. The remaining issue is packing them into an SH4 compliant .dat file.

I'm at the point where I need to do some in-game testing to verify the new vessels will work properly. I've recreated from scratch the T, N and O files and tested them on existing SH4 meshes. Now I need to see if my UV mapping and meshes are going to work correctly. Making the individual components is one thing, having them work in harmony is another...

So, I'm cooling my heels a bit until we can get an SH4 .dat produced...

Thanks for the compliments. If anyone wants to port my vessels to SH4 that's OK with me, as long as I'm credited & it's for free. If I'm still in the mood after finishing my mod for SH3 I would like to try and create a version of it for SH4 but right now I do not know how to convert SH3 ships to SH4. I think there was a tutorial posted on how to do this but I can't find it anymore.

We are all hoping that when S3D becomes capable of doing this, importing a model will become literally a cut and paste level of difficulty---for the basic model. Obviously the zon file etc adds another level of complexity as werner could tell us

Your ships look amazing, BTW.

The only thing I'm worried about WRT porting over SH3 ships is that the stock SH4 ones have a far more detailed interior model which is exposed when parts of the ship get hit by shellfire or torpedoes. Won't this be a problem, unless new interiors are made for the SH3 ships?

It's possible to create the necessary internals I believe. The meshes that represent those particular hydrostatics are separate from the "external" meshes.
