A hint would be that it never was a "real" warship, technically. But it was officially listed as one.

You mean the life belt (right word for Rettungsring?) or behind this? It is hard to see even on better/other photos. It looks like some railing covered with canvas.

edit: i'm sure it is canvas or similar, only the railing behind standing out.
