80 years ago, December 21, 1940: Mid-Atlantic. U-65 (Type IX B, Stockhausen), launched on Oct. 15, operated off Freetown until Jan. 2, 1941, after being resupplied on Nov. 9-10, Nov. 28-29 and Dec. 7-9 from the combined oiler and supply ship Nordmark. U-65 became the first U-Boat to cross the equator on Dec. 11, 1940. Two of the 42 crewmen of the (neutral) Panamanian Charles Pratt (8982 GRT) are killed December 21 when Stockhausen sinks the steam tanker. Although he noted that the neutral flags painted on the sides were clearly visible, he decided to attack the ship without warning because it was clear from its position and course that she headed for an enemy port. The survivors of the Charles Pratt were picked up a few days later by the British merchant ships Gascony and Langleegorse and landed at Freetown.
