Default WTF? Can't even register SHV to play. UBI Servers down...

Title says it all. 1522 EST (Atlanta GA USA) and I've just installed SHV. I can't communicate with the server, I can't register for a UBI account, I can't play my new SHV. I have high-speed access to the net, including this forum, and everything else about my specs passed the installation test w/SHV.

Are the $#%&ing UBI servers under a DOS attack, or can I expect this crap to continue off and on indefinitely, I wonder?

Any of you play today?

Oh well, I guess I should have listened to my gut and much of this community and not bought this buggy software until AFTER they removed the DRM. Sure wish I could comment on how good/bad SHV is, but since I can't even get the game to run (since I can't connect to UBI) I can't.

Back to SH3/GWX for me.

I doubt they are under attack, that was simply an excuse. It's either scheduled downtime (World of Subcraft!), or their servers simply cannot cope with the volume of traffic using them. Personally, the latter sounds likely.

Edit: Saturday night, everyone trying to log in and play their games. The system simply can't handle all those logins.

No, the DDOS pirates don't work during the week, only on the weekend! They only work during the peak gaming hours, of course! And they are so extremely good that their attack just looks like regular customers login in! Aren't they really smart? ;-)

I was able to connect after a couple of attempts. Now I'm afraid to close the game in fear that I will not be able to play this evening, so I guess I will just pause it?

Wasn't there a 'press release' from a pirate group announcing that as Ubisoft had said that 'if the game servers go down, they would release a patch to remove DRM', then the pirate group said that they were going to take the server down with a DDOS?

I don't know how true that is, because obviously Ubisoft said that in the context of the servers being retired, not denied, but did that press release actually occur? It can't all be a big Ubisoft conspiracy, unless they are posting false reports, or false press releases before their servers go down? They aren't that smart.

I've no idea of course, but I'd speculate that the cause is a combination of DDOS and VIPDOS.

DDOS is not that hard to do - anyone can ping the server.
VIPDOS is not that hard to do - anyone with the game can try to play it.

BTW, if the hackers were really serious, they'd be trying PDOS attacks, which are less resource intensive than DDOS attacks but much more damaging...now that is something you don't want to hear.

For those of us not familiar with IT attacks, what is PDoS? (In general terms, please).

The Far Cry 2 forums imply otherwise.

I highly doubt any of the hackers attacking Ubi's servers remotely care about SH5. Mostly it's over Far Cry 2 and some of their other ladder ranked games.

Heh, Ubi's customer base doing its thing is the equivalent of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack.

Has there been official response that this was another DDOS attack?
My gut feeling is it is just UBI servers not being able to handle weekend traffic, but can't say for sure.
