Ah, thanks. I had thought about trying EB, but the fact that it ends in AD 14 kind of bothers me (and no, it has nothing to do with the lack of lorica segmentata). I think I'd just prefer it more if the timeline spanned the Republic and Imperial times more evenly. Are there any user mods available that extend the enddate?

But those graphics look very good indeed. Is it 1.1

AFAIK, you can change the end date, check the EB forums, I think there was a thread(s) about it. But mind you, 1 year in EB is 4 turns, so even if it ends to 14AD, it will be a long campaign.

And yes, it is 1.1, the latest.

I hate the plague, out of fear I pulled my general out of the plagued city and moved him to my capital....once long ago (guess the first time I played RTW). BAAAAD MOVE!

the general was death and the Faction leader.....

A quick update on the campaign against the Gauls.

238BC

The Spearheads' attack on the Gaul has suffered it's first major setback, putting the whole campaign to a halt. On the spring of 242BC, the Sextvs' Spearheads conquered the hilltop fortress of Gergovia, but were unable to continue the push as the army had lost roughly 25% of it's men, mostly cavalry.

When the summer came, Sextvs lead his cavalry out of Gergovia to south, to the coastal fortress of Massilia that had been conquered during the winter. From there, Sextvs and his men were transported by ships to Rome, to reinforce the cavalry and get few newly formed Polybian Cavalry legions.

This move left Captain Pavlvs in charge of defending Gergovia until Sextvs came back. The Gauls soon realised this and mounted attack after another to take the fortress back. Fortunately, the defences held and in late summer, Sextvs returned to defend the fort, but no further attacks were made by the Gauls.

As the summer came to an end and turned to fall, Sextvs split his troops, taking with him his cavalry and half of the infantry. The scouts had seen the Gaul leader roaming around nearby and the general wanted to act fast to get him. He did eventually find the leader, just north of Gergovia. The Gauls were taken by surprise and a fierce fight began. Sextvs did his usual trick and put his infantry to the open field to bait the enemy to attack them, while his cavalry sat silently in the woods waiting. And once again, the Gauls fell on to it, the battle was quickly over and the Gaullish leader layed dead on the battlefield.

On his return trip, a runner came to give him a message from Gergovia. The Gauls had attacked it with force and Captain Pavlvs needed help fast. On his way back south, Sextvs was ambushed by a ~2300 headed Gaul army. Luckily, the enemy had no cavalry and the most of the battlefield was covered with forest, allowing Sextvs to move unseen with his heavy cavalry, making hit and run attacks from behind the enemy while they were tied to the infantry. This proved to work perfectly, the enemy fell by dozens on each charge. Although he won the battle, he lost ~250 men from his 1100 men army.

On the next day he arrived to Gergovia, only to find it overrun and bodies of his Spearheads thrown down from over the walls. Outnumbered by nearly 900 men, Sextvs was confident that the lust for revenge would give his remaining troops the extra will and strength needed to take the city back. And so they prepared for what was to be the last attack for many of the soldiers in the Spearheads legion.

TRIARIII!! FORWARD!

"You guys do the fighting, I heard there's a stripper on the next village. BYEE!"

Puuuuuush!

In ur flankz, pwning ur army

Run tooo theee hiiiillls, run for your livveees!!

"Right, go past the beerhall and turn left. NO, THE OTHER LEFT!!"

I bet that last Gaul didnt know how wonderfull day it was to be when he woke up in the morning.

Another fine victory right there Dowly,

I'm about to lose one for sure.....Narbo Martius, its full of townwatch and sieged by 2 army strong
I still cant believe that my preatorians where a complete joke against some wardogs and mere barbarians....really HASTATI can do better then that!
so after losing that time taking and pricey army
I turned into something like this:

Aye, might be a nice victory, but now all that is left from Spearheads are those units that survived that battle and Sextvs is 62 years old too. Time to start building a new army and find me a new commander.

But on the bright side, I now got the first reform and get better armored cavalry and infantry.

Oh.. one thing about that last battle, when it was over and I pressed the end turn button, I got a CTD.. I surely hope it had time to autosave the game.

I'm thinking of abandoning the whole Gaul campaign, I hate to fight them. Barbarians or not, they are ******* crazy bunch! Running around with their dick flapping in the wind hacking your guy's heads off, not nice. Much rather would take on the Karthagenian elephants. And the whole of Gaul is covered with forest and the forest is THICK in EB.

How's you plague going?

The plague is gone, havent lost a governor for it...only the garrison has been effected by it and ofcourse the local people.

and I'm too getting sick of fighting these barbarian Hordes....
especially the spaniards....they are freaking annoying.

The brittons seem to have calmed down a bit with attacking me at full strenght...
the gauls have after the next siege only one Province left...huraaaaay...which is in North-West Spain

I try to get a ''cease fire'' with the Brittons to relief presure from the north so I can focus myself on Spain.

The spaniards are really a crazy bunch, they contain mostly light infantry but there is one unit called the ''Bull Fighters'' (Guerreros de Torro) they are almost immume to arrows....well they dont lose as much a light infantry would... and they are thought to fight sword vs sword.
(sometimes I really start to suspect there is a magic potion involved which give these barbarians abnormal strenght....)

I'm planning to invade spain with 4 main armies...
and screw the preatorians, too pricey and take too much time to create and are easily defeated then the Legionares....which are cheaper and faster to build.
also I hope to get a racing track soon to build Roman Legionare Cavalry...

and perhaps I start to use Gladiators in my armies too where's Maximus Decimus Meridius when you need the buggah

Havent met the Spaniards yet in my game. I think I keep it that way until I attack Karthage, at that point I need to go to Spain too as some of their cities are in the southern part of Spain. :hmm: What I really hate about fighting the Gauls with EB is that there's no one Gaul faction perse, but 2. The Aedui and the Arveni. So basically I'm fighting 2 factions at the same time. Sure, they hate eachother too and fight at times, but they tend to unify against me when they get the chance. Taking turns to attack my cities etc.

I really think I need to build more than 1 attacking army. :rotfl:The Spearheads have been my only real attacking army since the beginning of the campaign.

And so my freaking hatred against the spaniards continue...

I kindly asked the British to back down...but nah..they rather die instead.
fine....

Now...the spaniards.....I really start to get very annoyed with these Bull fighters....
they are almost too good to be true...almost everything you throw at them does little...A really pain in the arse for me to fight against...but I manage...I just throw everything I got at them, still trying to find their weakspot...Gladiators..hurry:p!

anyhow...I've lost 1 province Narbo...seen in the above post...but from there on I'm holding them back..I just keep assembling armies that Masalia and push the spaniards back to Spain and try to keep them there so I can kick the british back as they wont want to cease fire...ow wait..they want but not with me
the Brutii and scipii are now in a Cease fire with Spain...and the british as well...the SPQR is negotiating...if they cease fire they will start to poke me in the back to stop the attacks on the Spaniards....Someting I will refuse to do!

the Reformation of my Armies have taken a lot of money.. I had 40.000 Dinarii before I started...now I'm down to 3.000 as a balance after each turn...and I still manage to recruit what I want..only upgrading my Cities to get better units is now on a slow phase.

some screenshots:

versus the British after they refused the Cease fire offer:

''its not smart to try to catch a Fireball from a Onager''

''Well, if you dont come to me, I just have to come to you''

''Comon...1 2 3 4 move those fat blue arses if your too slow you die!''

Versus the Spaniards:

''CHARGE!!!!''

''Testing the Bullfighters...''

the Campaign map (note: look at the size of the Egypt's Empire on the minimap ''left bottom corner of the screenshot'' lets keep those as a Ally!)

I'm playing on easy level at the moment but the bloody Britons. I manage dto get a ceasefire and 1000 dinarii off the Spanish so since the Brits have only 2 provinces on the mainland I'll take them then turn on the Spaniards where I have a standing army ready to go and navy to block the ports.

One more thing the senate wants me to blockade Londinium but I don't know if I can get ships into the Bay of Biscay then north to Britain.

One more thing the Gaulish faction was destroyed but there is still a village in spain with a Gaulish flag in it. WTF?

Was there message that said the Gaulish faction was destroyed, if YES then its probally the ''Fog'' over the part of the map that will prevent from updating it for you so it might be that the spanish already re-took the city.

just to explain that quikly , you can only complety see the provinces off your allies and ofcourse you can follow their movements easily.
the enemy provinces are covered with a sort of Fog, this will be a blind spot for you to spot enemy movement, also where the fog covers the map wont be updated each turn, it will update as soon you have a unit Spy/Army entering the province.
